Last time,Johnny ran away with this(nice trick, considering the state he's in) This time, you get 2 votes making this a "Johnny and..." poll.

It's Johnny by a wide margin for me. Loved watching his show and it was one of the few shows my parents and I would watch together too. Steve Allen would be second for me. I can see that Jack Paar was a good host but I never connected with him the times I have seen him. Jay Leno can DIAF and I like Conan but I'd forget his name when making a list of Tonight Show hosts.

Haven't seen enough of Steve, so I'm gonna go with Johnny. He made TONIGHT such an institution and such hallowed ground that it sparked not one, but two succession battles.

I only used one vote, for Johnny Carson. He towers over the others.

I never saw the older ones before Johnny, so I can't really say about them. Easily Carson though. The later hosts don't even come close.

Howzabout starting a poll for "Best Tonight Show GUEST Host" ?? (Yes, I realize they now show repeats instead having a guest host, but there was a time when "the show must go on" even when the host went on vacation)
I'd vote for Garry Shandling as the best fill-in for Johnny, with Richard Pryor running a close second

Johnny's in a whole higher dimension. Parr and Allen were good but Johnny made it an art form. Leno was a hack/whore. Conan's an excellent writer but he's not host material and Fallon's playing dress up. Those last three are also just trying to do their Carson imitations whenever possible.

Then once he got the regular gig, he seemed to immediately become unfunny. When he was guest, he was doing his stand up, basically. He was funny, edgy, and entertaining. By the time he finally got the gig, he wasn't any of those things anymore.

He became disturbingly whitebread. He was also hilarious as a recurring Letterman guest. Maybe he was simply a better sprinter than a long-distance runner.
