Since there's nothing else going on today, what are your favorite John Carpenter movies? Mine in no particular order are(actually all of them, but for the sake of the topic, my favorites):

Halloween
Escape from New York
The Fog
Big Trouble in Little China
Starman
The Thing
Prince of Darkness - Alice Cooper even makes an appearance!
They Live - "I came here to chew bubblegum & kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum!"
In the Mouth of Madness - Sam Neill in a Lovecraftian-type tale.
Escape from L.A. - Yeah, it's basically a remake of New York, but it's Snake Plissken!
Vampires

Robert K. Live from Austin :drink:

They Live - with Rowdy Roddy Pipper!!
Halloween
Escape from New York
In the Mouth of Madness
The Thing

I like most everything he has done, but those are probably my favorites.

Assault on Precinct 13.
Halloween.
Big Trouble in Little China.

I thought Escape from L.A. captured the spirit of the original wonderfully. It was just as long and boring, only with a lot more money :D

Halloween
Escape from New York
The Fog
Starman
The Thing

Starman was quite a departure for him at that time and was a very enjoyable movie. Might just have to go find it and watch it again.

Nothing beats Halloween!

Escape from New York fairly close though. The Fog is a "fun" little ghost story if you ignore some of the more obvious plot holes.

I love "THEY LIVE"! One of the longest fight scenes in all of cinema.

Watching Rodriguez interview Carpenter on his El Rey network right now. What a great interview series.

It's out on Blu? Yeah, I remember watching that scene and wondering how he got past the MPAA at the time.

Yes, Shout Factory did a collector's edition that came out late 2013. Commentary track by Carpenter on it. That one and Rolling Thunder made for a creepy, 1970's violence year last year.

Halloween still is the pinnacle to me. What could have been a generic slasher movie gets elevated to icon status thanks to direction, acting and that creepy music.

Assault On Precinct 13 (essentially a western done in a modern ghetto) is also very effective. I work in an old rundown precinct that dates back to the 1800s (it was once a farmhouse) and it is slated to close one day. I just remarked the other day that it would make a great setting for a horror film.

When people walk into this precinct who may have once worked there twenty, thirty years ago they are shocked it has not changed. It will always be a dump.

The thing is, there wasn't such thing as "generic slasher" yet -- Halloween was one of the rare birds that essentially created a genre, and also did it the best it's ever been done all in one whack. The slasher didn't improve much from anything Halloween did.

Almost every bloody teen horror film for the next generation seemed to be a combination of elements that were present in either Texas Chainsaw or Halloween.
