So I picked up this book at a 50% off sale at my local shop and it's been quite a trip reading it. It's funny how back in the 40s, comics could care less about continuity or logic. Change the origin, make Clark Superboy before being Superman, having someone else find the rocket and bring him to an orphanage etc. etc.

I also love how in the first stories, he didn't even bother wearing glasses and yet people thought he and Superboy were two different people simply because of his clothes/costume. Hilarious! Even after Clark picked up a car in FRONT OF HIS PALS! Boy oh boy, many head-shaking moments.

Meanwhile I wonder what happened to his pals Squint and Ted and the man who found the ship even the ship itself :).

Wondering if Squint and Ted were stand-ins for Joe Shuster (bad vision) and Jerry Siegel.

It was nice to be able to tell amazing stories about Lara and Jor-El escaping Krypton or Batman's parents meeting aliens, and other outlandish stuff. And it was just fun and forgotten. We didn't obsess over how it would fit into continuity.

I have a real fondness for those Silver Age stories like Superman's big brother and other Kryptonians and alternate versions, PLUS the back to Krypton stories with Lyla Lerrol etc.

I would love to see a Superman movie with a Krypton based on the Silver Age one, where you'd actually think it's a tragedy if it blew up. Bright colorful and full of wonder.

I've yet to see a Krypton in a movie or tv show where I gave a shit it blew up. Same with the death of the Waynes. Yet to see one version where I felt anything. And that should be heart wrenching, it's the whole basis of Batman.

By this point it's all backstory;you know it's coming,so it's nigh-impossible to be shocked by it.

I thought how they handled the Wayne's deaths in the "Chill Of The Night" episode of The Brave & The Bold was very effective.
The Waynes walk into a dark alley, the shadows close around them, then two flahes of light, gunfire,a child's cry...chilling.

I need to watch that again, though I should have been clear that I was referring to the live action versions.

I thought Nolan did it pretty well in "Batman Begins."

Really? That's the one thing I thought Man of Steel did right. The weird Flash Gordon look, the dragons and everything! That part of the movie was my favorite..

Way too dark and grey for my tastes.

They always fill Krypton with a-holes (except for Jor-El).

That's to be expected, isn't it? Krypton perishes because no one will listen to their greatest scientist's warnings. They're not only asses, they're incredibly stupid.

Not all of them, just those in charge at the moment. The rest of the population is kind and intelligent (or they wouldn't have such an advanced society).

I've always believed that Krypton had become paradise and perhaps because of it, the people were complacent and ill-equipped to adjust to real danger since their lives had become idyllic.
