Product Description
The original Byrds reunion album re-presented with superb audio. In late 1972, the classic, original line-up of THE BYRDS - Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Roger McGuinn and Michael Clarke - reunited to record their first album together since 1965. Signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, the album Byrds (1973) brought the band's mix of folk rock and country rock to a fresh audience. Musically The Byrds were in fine form with trademark harmony vocals on the likes of Clark's breezy 'Full Circle' and 'Changing Heart', Crosby's acerbic 'Long Live the King', McGuinn's anthemic rocker 'Born to Rock 'n Roll', Hillman's gloriously up-tempo 'Things will be Better' plus exceptional covers of Joni Mitchell's 'For Free' and Neil Young's 'Cowgirl in the Sand' and '(See the Sky) About to Rain'. The album was a Top 20 hit and it remains an overlooked classic that continues to improve with age. "The band's direction is no-nonsense, straight-ahead music... The Byrds make it on the strength of the music alone" (NME, 1973). With two bonus tracks from Gene Clark's 1972 Roadmaster album - 'She's the Kind of Girl' and 'One in a Hundred' - also featuring the full Byrds complement of Clark, Hillman, Crosby, McGuinn and Clarke.

1. Full Circle
2. Sweet Mary
3. Changing Heart
4. For Free
5. Born To Rock 'N' Roll
6. Things Will Be Better
7. Cowgirl In The Sand
8. Long Live The King
9. Borrowing Time
10. Laughing
11. (See The Sky) About To Rain

Bonus Tracks:
12. She's The Kind Of Girl
13. One In A Hundred

No idea how the sound is (I have the Wounded Bird), but this is a tragically underlooked/under appreciated tremendous album.

I agree. Bought this in 1974 with no expectations as I didn't appreciate their history and liked it for what it is...not what it isn't. In retrospect now with the complete historical picture I can understand some of the disappointment. But I still like it. Could it have been better? Certainly the mix could have been better. McGuinn's 12-string basically mixed out of a lot of stuff is kind of sad......

We already have them, but they're certainly appropriate for adding onto the end of this album.

Both of the "bonus tracks" were available on the Gene Clark "Roadmaster"album. When the tracks were recorded, the Byrds came in individuallly; rather than record as a band.

Thanks for telling me, I don't own any GC solo albums.

Agreed. I think it's a very enjoyable album, with several excellent cuts.

Crosby's cover of Joni's For Free for one.

Here's an audio rip (from an earlier pressing, not Raven's new remaster):

The Gene Clark tracks on this album are terrific. I think his songs are the closest the set comes to classic Byrds. Still, it's a strong album. I bought it when it came out and I have the Wounded Bird CD plus the Roadmaster CD. I may still get this release if the sound is better.

Please let us know on the sound. It's one of my favorite Byrds albums.

Bump: This has been removed from the label's release schedule, at least for the time being.

The new remaster did finally end up being released by Raven, but apparently ran into licensing issues that prevented Amazon USA from importing it. Some third party sellers do have it in stock now, and it can also be purchased directly from Amazon UK:

There is a 2014 Japanese Asylum "Blu-spec" remaster that concerns me, as it shows a "DR8" (highly compressed). I haven't yet had the chance to audibly compare it to the Wounded Bird version. Don't know if Raven used the same master as the Japanese Asylum or not. The Japanese remaster has no bonus tracks.
