Gus Kubicek (played by Guttenberg) is a depressed and overweight cartoonist who recently won a battle against Hodgkin’s disease. His caring sister Lizzie Pots (Long), a nosy romance novelist, responds to his sadness by trying to set him up with a suitable woman. Yet to do so she must make him seem more dynamic and attractive. When Gus falls in love with Emily (Gertz), he adopts the persona of Lobo Marunga, a leather-clad biker from New Zealand.
This is, honestly, the worst movie I've ever seen - I say this without exaggeration.
Guttenberg's "New Zealand" accent has to be heard to be disbelieved. I actually watched this movie with a friend from New Zealand, and her outraged reaction to Guttenberg's botched accent was hilarious. In fact, it was the only funny aspect to this romantic 'comedy'. There are laughs to be had, but none of them are intentional. It's as if everything about the 80's just suddenly turned to crap in 1990, and this movie was the confirmation of it.
Guttenberg's Police Academy days were well behind him, and his limitations as an actor are on glaring display in this film. He's unfunny, tries too hard in every scene, and the whole premise is so totally idiotic that it's hard to believe any of the people involved actually chose to do this. The fact that they did is pretty damning, and Steve's portrayal of the cartoonist is almost as hateworthy as his portrayal of his biker alter-ego, which is just the most painful performance I've ever seen in a movie. Seriously, there's porn with more depth and genuine acting ability on display than there is in this thing. It's so completely horrible, it has to be seen - no words can convey the shitness of it. You watch it, and then think about how awful it is, and your mind kind of stalls as you struggle to understand how and why this movie was made.
I dare you, fellow IMWANkers, to watch this travesty and find any redeeming features in it.

Heh. I have some friends who love Hudson Hawk. I don't think I've seen very much of it.
I've heard of people who like that movie too. I just have no idea why. And I can even manage to understand why some people like the "Star Wars" prequels.
