Kerry King has vowed the first Slayer album without Jeff Hanneman will be everything their fans would want – even though he knows many are expecting to be disappointed.
The thrash veterans start recording sessions later this year, with Exodus man Gary Holt in place of Hanneman, who died last year of alcohol-related health issues.
And King believes the response to standalone track Implode, launched earlier this year, should offer hope to doubtful followers.
He tells Arte Concert: "I know people are going to expect us to fail, because it's the first record without Jeff. I get it. But I'm also very proud of what we've done so far towards new material.
"It's fast and the slow stuff's heavy. Everything people liked Slayer for in the past is on this record."
He says of Implode: "I never go online and see what people are talking about, because people are ten foot tall behind a computer screen. But a lot was positive. A lot of people said, 'For anybody that was worried about what Slayer was going to sound like post-Hanneman – don't worry about it.'"
King last year stated that, while Holt would be invited to write solos for the band's 12th album, he wouldn't be writing songs. "Fans aren't ready for it," the co-founder said. "It would be like throwing somebody to the wolves."
"If there's another record after this one and Gary's still with us, that will be a time when I say, 'Feel free to throw any riffs my way.'"

Kerry King says work on Slayer's 11th album is “business as usual” – despite the turmoil of lineup changes forced on the band since last year.
Drummer Dave Lombardo was dismissed in February 2013 following a pay dispute, and was replaced by Paul Bostaph. Guitarist Jeff Hanneman died three months later of alcohol-related liver failure. He had been absent from the band since the previous year after contracting a flesh-eating disease from a spider bite, with Exodus's Gary Holt filling in.
It means the follow-up to 2009’s World Painted Blood will be Slayer’s first album without the two original guitarists collaborating in the studio – and King has already admitted he knows some fans expect him to fail.
But he tells ScionAV: “There's more talk about pressure than anything. I mean, I've been making up this music for 30 years. So I think it's business as usual.
“We've got fast material, we've got heavy material, we've got spooky material. So anything you dug about Slayer, historically, you should dig about this record.”
And he insists the thrash giants will keep writing as long as they’re together, saying: “You can only beat the old material so much; at some point you get tired of playing certain songs. There are some that you're just going to play till you stop, and there's some you're like, ‘I’m ready to take four years off on this one.’”
The album, produced by Terry Dale, is expected early next year via Nuclear Blast. Meanwhile, Phil Anselmo has discussed how close King came to joining Pantera in the 1980s.

Slayer have revealed the contents of the Metal Eagle version of upcoming album Repentless.
The limited-edition set comes in an aluminium case which weighs 7.8lbs and only 3000 will be made available worldwide. Slayer's 11th album – and first since the passing of Jeff Hanneman – is issued on September 11 via Nuclear Blast.
The label have revealed that the Metal Eagle set will include a deluxe digipak CD which folds out into an inverted cross as well as a Blu-ray and DVD featuring Slayer Live At Wacken 2014 and a Making Of Relentless documentary. Also in the case is a live CD of the Wacken 2014 performance, a poster, an album sticker and a numbered certificate.
It'll be available exclusively via Nuclear Blast's online store.
Slayer singer Tom Araya recently told Metal Hammer that Hanneman's death brought the band closer together as they worked on the follow-up to 2009's World Painted Blood.
He said: “We’ve had to open up a line of communication. Kerry’s very black and white. I’m not a black and white person, but that’s Kerry. We’ve had to talk and that’s not been the case in the past."
Slayer and Anthrax go on a joint UK tour in November, with support from Kvelertak. Before that, Slayer have a string of North American dates and their jaunt with Anthrax also includes shows in Europe.

$179 for that. Insane. The sad part is those "extras" will probably be released separately later on down the road, pissing off everyone that spent the $179.

Slayer have unveiled the cover art for their 11th album Repentless.
It’s due out on September 11 via Nuclear Blast and the design was created by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco in collaboration with the band’s Tom Araya and Kerry King.
Araya says: “We had a number of submitted ideas for the cover artwork and we felt Marcelo’s was the best. We made some suggestions and the result is an awesome album cover.”
Slayer will release the album’s title track on Friday (June 19) on digital formats – a song King calls his “Hannemanthem” as it was written about his late colleague Jeff Hanneman who died in 2013.
The band are currently touring North America and will return to Europe later this year:

If it was $60, I'd be in.
I had mine ordered within 3 minutes of finding out about it. It doesn't matter to me if the live bonus material gets a separate release down the road, I'm in this for the metal eagle.

Here is the cheaper deluxe edition option for those that didn't want to spring for a metal eagle. Unfortunately, as best I can tell it's European only. I've ordered through Nuclear Blast's Europe site in the past and have never had a problem.

I forgot about my post blasting the $179 price tag on the uber-deluxe edition. At the time of my posting, there was no mention of a regular deluxe edition.
Sooooo, I sprung for the CD/Blu Ray. The CD is good.... typical Slayer. What is worth the price I paid (less than $20) is the live show from Wacken. If anyone is on the fence, get the deluxe version (DVD or BR). That Wacken show completely blows away the Big 4 show they did.

From blabbermouth.net:
SLAYER's "Repentless" debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200, having shifted 50,000 equivalent album units in the week ending September 17.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
In terms of pure album sales, "Repentless" opened with 49,000 copies, marking SLAYER's highest-charting album yet.
"Repentless" now also holds the record as the band's career-highest chart debut in Germany (No. 1), Holland (No. 2), Australia (No. 3), New Zealand (No. 8), the U.K. (No. 11) and on the Japanese International Chart (No. 1). It bowed at No. 3 in Finland, No. 4 in Belgium, and No. 5 in both Sweden and Greece. Additionally, the album debuted in the Top 10 in France (No. 7), Italy (No. 8), Hungary (No. 9), and Japan (No. 10).
"The entire Nuclear Blast global team thanks SLAYER and their loyal fans everywhere for the tremendous first-week success for 'Repentless'," said Gerardo Martinez, Nuclear Blast's General Manager, USA. "SLAYER made an amazing album that stayed true to who the band is, and the fans' overwhelming response is proof of that."
SLAYER's previous album, "World Painted Blood", registered a first-week tally of 41,000 to land at No. 12.
The band's 2006 CD, "Christ Illusion", premiered with more than 62,000 units to enter the chart at No. 5.
SLAYER reached No. 8 with its 1994 release "Divine Intervention" after moving 93,000 copies of that album in its first week.
SLAYER's 2001 album, "God Hates Us All", opened with 51,000 copies to debut at No. 28, while 1998's "Diabolus In Musica" sold 46,000 units in its first week, landing at No. 31.
"Repentless" was released on September 11 via Nuclear Blast. The follow-up to 2009's critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated "World Painted Blood" was produced by Terry Date, who has previously worked with PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN.
"Repentless" was made available in a wide array of formats, as detailed below:
* Limited CD + Blu-ray digipak (includes Blu-ray of "Slayer Live at Wacken 2014" and the "Making of Repentless" documentary) * Limited CD + DVD digipak (includes DVD of "Slayer Live at Wacken 2014" and the "Making of Repentless" documentary) * Strictly limited 12-inch sized Box (includes CD + Blu-ray digipak, DVD, exclusive Repentless 12-inch picture vinyl, "Slayer Live at Wacken 2014" CD, 12-inch photo card, 12-inch fold-out poster) * CD jewel case * Vinyl in gatefold (audio mastered for vinyl) * Digital (all digital platforms) * Limited edition "Metal Eagle Edition"
The artwork was created by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco in collaboration with the band's Tom Araya and Kerry King.

I've given it one listen and found it to be pretty average. Not bad, just nothing really stood out for me. We'll see if it turns out to be a grower.
The metal eagle turned out to be better than expected. The detail is excellent and the colors "pop" much more than the photos indicate. I don't regret the metal eagle portion of the purchase one bit, definitely one of the best deluxe packaging gimmicks I've ever seen.
