I'm not a huge Kinks fan, but the gold standard to me has to be the Ultimate Collection 2-CD set from the early 2000's. I was very pleased with that compilation. Not sure how Sony can improve upon that one, other than to make it more widely available to the public.

I suspect this will be limited to the RCA and Arista years, if Sony got the rights back. Plus Phobia which was on Columbia

I love the Kinks and have never found any comp that properly satisfies the US and UK in one setting.

To me the best is Come Dancing 1977-1986 which covers the Arista years rather well (although not perfectly).

I'd love to see a 2CD comp containing ALL their 60's-90's hit singles and radio hits but that will never happen.

I liked Kinks Kronikles, Greatest: Celluloid Heroes (RCA), and Come Dancing. There are others but these are the essential comps for me.

Kink Kronikles was the first Kinks album I ever had and one of the first albums I ever had. It's a good one.

The Kinks are a revered band of the old school. Begun way back in the early days of Rock and Roll. The Kinks, with two brothers (Ray, and Dave), along with Mick Avory, Pete Quaife, John Dalton, and John gosling, among some others as replacements forged a legacy that few bands have enjoyed, even to this day. Over the years, their songs have remained in the hearts of fans, as well as the albums they came on.
On October 14, Legacy will look back at the long run that the band had. Legacy has planned a 2CD, 48-track Essential series collection that revisits the Pye/Reprise, RCA, Arista, and Columbia Records years of the band. All of the tracks selected for this set were personally selected by Ray Davies, and approved for their inclusion by the band.

The 2CD The Essential Kinks set will include several live performance tracks, a few US single versions, and a huge selection of career-spanning tracks that measure their greatness from the years that include the ’60s through the ’90s.

The Essential Kinks will contain a booklet that will host new liner notes by David Bowie, vintage photos, and more. This career set will precede a Legacy Edition of Muswell Hilllbillies expected in the Fall.
Remember, The Essential Kinks will be released on October 14, to be followed later by Muswell Hillbillies.

Very nice collection, but the thing I wanted to see the most (remastered MCA tracks, although a few made the box set) did not happen as that era is totally ignored (probably due to label issues).

I hate when comps feel incomplete.

Also, the original version of "Lola" isn't here?

This is inexcusable. We can always nitpick about these kind of comps, but you can't leave that record off of any serious Kinks komp.
It's hard to find fault with anything on disc 1, although I think "I Need You" should be there, and the lame "Supersonic Rocket Ship" shouldn't.
Disc 2 could be stronger-maybe "Juke Box Music" instead of "Sleepwalker", for starters?

"Inexcusable" is right; Sony could certainly have afforded to license "Lola."

Leaving that aside, and barring being a Kinks diehard/completist, combining "Essential" and "Kink Kronikles" should cover all the bases.

"Sleepwalker" should be there-it was a hit and a great song with great guitar work. But yes, "Juke Box Music" should be there.

"Misfits", "Low Budget", "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "Give The People What They Want" and the absent MCA tracks make this rather incomplete.

It's like-here ya go to 1984...and oh by the way, one song from 1993.

This one makes no sense at all.
Some great stuff on here, but no rhyme or reason if they leave those cuts off.

I will be interested in hearing how this new "Essential" comp compares to "Ultimate". I have the old Rhino GH CD - and I don't know what I'm expecting with these recordings, but that one is difficult to listen to. I also recently bought a used copy of the Greatest Hits CD with the vaunted "ugly pink" booklet - that is highly praised at the SH forum. I found it to be....shall we say "lacking" ... a lot.

David Bowie: 'I've never heard a Kinks song that I didn't like'

David Bowie has written the sleeve notes for a new Kinks compilation.

The 48-track double album, 'The Essential Kinks', will be released on October 14 in North America and is a celebration of the band's 50th anniversary.

In a statement on his website, Bowie has released an excerpt from the sleeve notes with an image of him with Ray Davies captioned, "I've never heard a Kinks song that I didn't like".

"Of course, from their noisy and brash beginnings, The Kinks have come to stand for some of the most enduring and heart-clutching pop of all time. They are in the gut of every British songwriter who followed them and are indisputably a cornerstone of everything pop and rock. I love 'em. The world loves 'em."

Are you picking this one up Linda?

Also, it seems like the MCA years are forever lost?

I believe we will be getting the (MCA - eventually) in that so much consolidation in the labels are and have been occurring Pete they will do so.

Plus the MCA were freak in great in my book. Would love to have re-masters with bonus for those titles.

Yes. I'm anxious to hear how they've remastered the RCA and Arista material. It could take years for all the Legacy Editions to come out.

Forgive my ignorance but which albums are the MCA years? Sleepwalker and that era?
