Midnight Oil this month will release for the first time remastered CDs of the band’s full catalog from 1978 to 1993 — the group’s first eight full-length albums, plus two EPs — and also will finally issue its 1990 VHS release “Black Rain Falls” on DVD and digitally.
The CD remasters and the “Black Rain Falls” DVD are all set for release on June 20 in Australia to coincide with a new exhibit “The Making of Midnight Oil,” which opens the same day at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, according to an announcement on Midnight Oil’s website.
Remastered editions of the band’s classic catalog were released digitally in 2008 to coincide with the expanded CD reissue of 1987′s Diesel and Dust. The new release will mark the first time on CD for remastered editions of Midnight Oil (1978), Head Injuries (1979), Place Without a Postcard (1981), 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 (1982), Red Sails in the Sunset (1984), Blue Sky Mining (1990) and Earth and Sun and Moon (1993), plus the Bird Noises (1980) and Species Deceases (1985) EPs.
It’s not known if those titles will receive CD releases outside of Australia.
As for “Black Rain Falls,” it captures the events of May 30, 1990, when the Aussie rockers — who were in New York to play three nights at Radio City Music Hall during the Blue Sky Mining tour — pulled up in front of Exxon’s Sixth Avenue headquarters on a flatbed truck, unfurled a banner that read “Midnight Oil makes you dance, Exxon oil makes us sick” and proceeded to play a 30-minute lunch-hour set in protest of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. (“I love it when the suits clap,” frontman Peter Garrett famously said.)
The DVD will be Region 0, meaning it can be played worldwide, according to the Oils’ Facebook page. An international release is expected in July. Below, check out a trailer for the DVD release.
The new archival releases come as talk of Midnight Oil reunion continues to heat up, with drummer Rob Hirst recently telling Faster Louder that the band’s waiting for former government minister Garrett — who recently hopped onstage with Hunters & Collectors — to finish writing his autobiography.
He said:
“Peter’s writing his memoirs at the moment so that might take a while, but I think everyone’s up for it. Bonesy’s (Bones Hillman, bass) living in Nashville, and by all accounts playing better than ever – the callouses on his fingers must be enormous by now! And of course Martin (Rotsey), Jim (Moginie) and I all play in The Break, so everyone’s around. We’ll just see down the track. Hopefully it won’t be so long that we won’t be able to put on the sort of show that we’d like to put on.”

Oh, how I want ALL of these!
I don't know what label in Australia is doing this (Sony?) and I can only hope these come to the US.
Don't know of any bonus cuts, but even if not, I'm fine.
Glad to see the back catalogue finally getting respect the last few years and having Black Rain Falls on DVD is a must!

I interviewed Rob Hurst in 1994 and asked him if there was any out-takes in the vault. He wasn't very keen on those at all sadly. I also worked for Martin the guitarist briefly when he was the lead guitarist in a band called The Kelly Gang also in 1994.
The 1st 2 albums always needed to be re-mastered, they sound bad on CD.
Hope they don't over compress the sound.
Peter Garret became a suit himself, I lost a lot of respect for him when he was the Federal Education Minister. He screwed up education in Australia and I am a teacher.

I can confirm the re-masters for at least the first few titles from 1978-1981 are superb.I didn't but any others as my originals sound fine. Definitely an upgrade on sound. They are only $10 each here at http://www.jbhifi.com.au I am not sure if they will ship to USA but you can try.

DR Database:
Midnight Oil = DR8 Head Injuries = DR7 Bird Noises = DR7 Place Without a Postcard = DR6 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 = DR6 Red Sails in the Sunset = DR6 Species Decreases = DR6 Diesel and Dust = DR7* Blue Sky Mining = DR7
*Diesel and Dust has a composite value of DR7. However, the 11 tracks range between a DR9 and DR13. I'm guessing there are a bunch of empty tracks between tracks 10 and 11 (since the original album only had 10 songs) which when included would totally screw up the composite DR value. Looking at the individual song values I'm guessing the CD would be either a DR10 or DR11.

I know basing an opinion on DR numbers and screenshots alone can be a mistake but the reports on the Oils discs is not encouraging. The original discs for 10,9,8 onward sound pretty good to my ears so I will wait for further reviews.

Very generous of you to research & disclose this anomaly, which is another example of why this "tool" is so unreliable and people who use it as their sole or primary barometer for music purchases potentially miss out on a lot of great music. Beyond the basic calculation flaw exposed here, the potential is so high for input error or misstatement, such as whether the format is lossy or lossless, or whether the year of issue listed is correct or even listed at all. John Cuniberti, Joe Satriani's long-time producer/engineer who recently remastered all of Satriani's albums for a box set and stated his antipathy toward the "Loudness Wars" during a Q & A on the Hoffman forums a few months back seriously questioned the validity of that whole http://dr.loudness-war.info/ database given that it lacks any professionally verifiable standards for input, source or calibration. Quote: "The reference is our ears and what we hope to get out of the given recording not something that was produced long ago in a faraway land. The MFSL [of Surfing With The Alien] doesn't work because the "purist" approach never works with rock music. It was never meant to have all that dynamic range. This is way I find this obsession over dynamic range a joke. It's like telling a painter that you would like his painting more if he used a different shade of blue in the sky like his older works." I know, I know...several folks on here often say, and may say yet again in responding to this, that the DR Ratings "match" what you hear with your ears. But for music listeners unfamiliar with all the caveats listed above and whose only conversation regarding the DR Database is with someone who is a dedicated follower...those Scarlet Numbers may have undue negative influence. The DR Database was created by people with a definite agenda: that any CD with a rating less than 14 is not "good"; people who input the info may have their own agendas, such as visceral dislike of a particular mastering engineer; and as with any publicly accessible & modifiable database, the credibility rests on the accuracy of the information. Cuniberti again: Quote: "Mastering engineers don't adjust each song level for a prescribe DR level. We use our ears because the apparent level is what humans respond to. Otherwise, we would run everything through some DR adjustment software and call it a day. A track that is just vocal and acoustic guitar will sound louder to your ears than a rock band with the same DR number so how do you put them on the same album? You use your ears. "

I own 4 of the 2014 remasters and they sound great, not super loud or anything like that. Just buy them and you won't be disappointed.

I could truly care less what some numbers say. I just want to know what somebody heard. Are there remasters I've heard that were painful? Yes. But not very many. The last thing I will do is judge something by DR levels.

I wonder what's the cheapest way to get these? Direct from amazon's Australian site? Another option? I hesitate to get them from third party sellers at amazon as you are most likely to get an old U.S. copy and not the current version...

Google "australian cd retailers" and you'll get a whole bunch of companies in Australia that do ship internationally (at Japan-like shipping prices which makes sense). I checked the first four hits that came up and it looks like all of them will pretty much ship worldwide.
