The only 2 Who comps I own are Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy (as good as any studio album) and the 2 CD Ultimate Collection which was the best Who comp to date (of many).

This is actually a pretty cool collection for those who like comps as there are some interesting choices including a few songs I don't have personally.

Waiting for Renny's painful response.........

My painful response:

Goody. Another Who best of. I'd have thought that they'd put 50 songs onto this thing.

The cover is almost, almost, as bad as The Stones' Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr which celebrated their 50th.

I might get it to play in the cop car, that's about it, not essential for me. At least it has Slip Kid, love that song.

I'm not sure I have "Real Good Looking Boy" - I picked up a cheap comp along the line that may have it. So I'm definitely on the fence for this. If it's cheap enough...

It also has "Zoot Suit", "Dogs", "Relay" (missing from Ultimate Collection) and manages "It's Not Enough" from Endless Wire. Songs like "It's Hard", "Trick Of The Light" and "Postcard" are cool inclusions.

The single edit of "Won't Get Fooled Again" I don't have (or want) but there it is.

Overall a very good collection nobody truly needs. And yes, the cover art stinks.

The Ultimate set has a nice track list and cover, though I recall it being noticably louder than the various songs from different 90s cds.

That it was-too loud actually as I recently listened to it.

Maybe this will be different?

I like this track list better though the edit of "Won't get Fooled Again" will be odd to hear (wasn't that on Who's Better, Who's Best?).

Another question:

Is this every single? If so, they're missing "The Real Me" and "Long Live Rock" and included some album tracks.

i can't believe that there are not a couple of "new" (old discarded or found in an unlabeled box) songs on here!

townshend is getting lazy in his old age........

and

we are really getting way overdue for another "who's next" release....let's see it came out in august of 1971.....ha! the thirty fifth anniversary edition is probably just around the corner....."join together" came out in '72, maybe they can tack that on there this time.

in all seriousness, i know i overdue it sometimes, but don't you all think it is really and truly getting ridiculously out of hand?

As has been noted, this is a comparatively offbeat compilation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Relay" shows up for the first time since the dawn of the Who remasters twenty years ago--the "Thirty Years Of Maximum R & B" boxed set, in which the opening of the song was victimized by a crossfade. The single version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" is worth at least one listen as possibly the most radical single edit in music history. "Zoot Suit", "Postcard", "Slip Kid" and "Don't Let Go The Coat" are all compilation outliers, and "The Last Time" is about as obscure as any Who studio recording ever made (with the possible exception of "Wasp Man" or "Here For More".)

And, as Pete mentioned, this comp should get points for at least attempting to chronologically follow the Who's single discography, although I'd be more enthusiastic if they had actually succeeded (or especially if they ever released a "2nd Singles Box" to go with the "1st Singles Box"). I'm not sure if "Boris The Spider" was ever actually released as a single, but it and "Trick Of The Light" may well be the first Entwistle song to show up on a Who compilation since his death.

There could be some interesting mixes/edits on here, but who knows (no pun intended). I guess what I'm trying to say that I'd actually be looking forward to it if I knew it was going to be presented with the sort of thoughtful care and attention to detail that Who releases in Japan routinely enjoy. But I'm guessing that it will not. That said--I think I'm going to keep an eye out for the Japanese version of this title, as several such past Japanese imports have contained some extremely rare stuff.

As for a "Who's Next" reissue...has it really been eleven years since the last one? If I had to wager on the next expanded Who deluxe title, it would be "My Generation". A mono disc, a stereo disc (like the Japanese title) and the remaining unreleased studio material from the Shel Talmy master tapes. It also turns 50 next year.

Indeed!

This really is a worthy comp with all the hits and singles (mostly), and some actual thought.

As for The Ox, I think (going on memory) that "My Wife" and "Boris The Spider" were on The Ultimate Collection in 2002 just prior to his death, but any since, I'd say no Ox songs.

Nice to see the minor US hit "Trick Of The Light" here.

I didn't even notice "The Last Time" was on here-that's very cool.

I keep hoping for a Who By Numbers deluxe with next year being the 40th anniversary of that one-maybe?

I can't see another My Generation as they just did that and also the separate mono release, but you may be right.

i guess my job as naysayer is never over.......since some people here are actually praising ANOTHER who 'best of', i will ask this question.....

if you are really truly a who fan (or a doors fan or a beach boys fan) wouldn't you already have every single thing that they have already put out and wouldn't it be just as easy, if you love this comp so much, to remake it using your own CD's and your own computer, and 2 CD-R's?

why, in the name of all things earthly, and heavenly for that matter, would any true who fan spend even 5¢ on this? YOU HAVE IT ALL ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!

someone please make me understand the defenders of these endless rehashings of old catalogs into 'best of' albums.

I think it's a two-prong answer.

One, "if" you have it all - and I'm not sure that I do. I'm a big Who fan, but that doesn't mean I automatically buy everything they release (same w/Zappa, to name just one). Assuming I don't have "Real Good Looking Boy", if the price is right, I might jump on it.

Two is looking at it not so much as how it might appeal to someone who's a big fan and probably has most or all of it, but as a way for a more casual fan to get some of these tracks. I'd hazard a guess that most of us who are big fans of a particular artist have favorite tracks that we wish other people got to hear and appreciate more often. "Trick Of The Light" from this is a good example - it's a song I've never heard on terrestrial radio, and I'm not sure I've heard it on satellite. But it's a very cool song, so it's good to see it getting exposure beyond the people who are willing to buy "Who Are You".

But flash over to the Ozzy "Memoir Of A Madman" thread, and my feeling is different - there is nothing on that CD that would get me to buy it. I have the Ozzy albums I want, and I'm not a fan of the later-era stuff. And if I were designing a comp to attract people who don't know a lot of Ozzy's stuff, it wouldn't look like that.

i would 100% agree with you that a "best of" or "greatest hits" comp is a great way for someone who doesn't know a lot about an artist to learn. i got hooked on quite a few artists in that exact manner, bought a "best of" first, find out i really like it, go get the catalog, trade in the "best of".

BUT......

in the case of the who, the beach boys, the doors, queen, and quite a few others, it has gotten to the point of ridiculousness, especially when they can't even add a new tune or two.

ps. i did buy the who 'best of' that included the 2 new songs a few years ago. and i still have it.

Not going to disagree on the quantity point. I'd love to see a listing of artists with more comps than studio/live albums. But I'm looking at this one just in terms of this one release, regardless of the other comps that are out there. When it comes to bands I'm really into, what I look for on comps is the oddball track that wouldn't necessarily fit in on a stereotypical "greatest hits" comp., like "Trick Of The Light".

What's especially frustrating is to go to a store and flip through the bins and see how many of the CDs are "The Essential..." or "Playlist" or similar comps. Great for the casual buyer, but not so much for someone who's moved even slightly beyond a superficial interest in someone.

Somebody please make me understand somebody that insists on threadcrapping every existing Who thread on these boards by compulsively taking the opportunity to bitch again and again about how Who fans are all a bunch of morons, especially when they don't compulsively whine about the Who at every opportunity in the same manner.

I wouldn't call that type of person a "naysayer"--"whiny, repetitious old man", perhaps, but not "naysayer".

I maybe out of line here (because it's Renny's obsession at times  ) but Renny DOES love The Who. :ohyes: It may be that he believes that The Who and others (The Doors as example) are watering down their legacy. I could be completely wrong but....just a thought.

These reissues are only things now that B&M will order (and carry) sad to say. Deep catlg as we all know is long gone. :sigh:

If The Who do a anniversary edition of Who By Numbers, all will be forgiven. :)

This is beyond tiresome.

Led Zeppelin remasters, Who comps, Doors comps, World Cup soccer, Glee, etc.

And by the way-I did not "parise" this. It's a good collection, that's what I said and that is true.

And, I, a very huge Who fan do NOT OWN ALL THESE SONGS as I stated earlier.

So, IF I buy it I have that right and might actually enjoy it.

I only own 2 Who comps as I mentioned before, so I am not being fleeced, suckered or cajoled into buying this IF I purchase it.

I'm not sure why I have to defend myself but whatever.

I hope there is a "World Cup" remix album in the future.
