'Sinister Six' gets 2016 release date as 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' moves backQuote: After bringing home more than $700 million around the globe in his last superhero adventure, Andrew Garfield and the Amazing Spider-Man franchise aren’t being rushed back into the fray. A third film was originally slated for June 10, 2016, but Sony announced today that Spidey wouldn’t swing back our way—at least in his own film—until 2018. The twist is that we still might get a taste of Spidey in two years, because Sinister Six is now officially on the calendar for Nov. 11, 2016. That franchise expansion, to be directed by Cabin in the Woods‘ Drew Goddard, will feature a rogue’s gallery of ne’er-do-wells from Spider-Man’s neighborhood, some of whom were likely introduced in the most recent film. “With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” said Sony president Doug Belgrad in a statement. Think there is a chance that our friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man makes a cameo to jump-start Sony’s next-generation franchise? Me, too.

Sony's Spider-Man franchise is getting more and more stuck in the web of its own mediocrity.

I genuinely believe that this movie will not happen, after the box office of ASM2. The franchise's box office keeps trending downward at significant levels, at least in the US.
ASM3 will probably still happen, but I can't see Sony waiting four years for it. As disappointing as the box office was for the recent film (and yes, I know it's weird to consider $200 mill a disappointment), the prospective take for a 3rd film will get lower the longer they wait for it. My guess is no Sinister Six movie, ASM3 either in 2016 or 2017, and then the studio calls it a day with this franchise for a while.

I hope they don't try to load it up with too many villains, as is often the case.

Honestly, I think a Sinister Six movie would do Elektra/Catwoman level box-office.

Latino Review used to be really accurate, but not really any more. I wonder if their sources are no more, so they just throw shit against the wall and see what sticks. Putting off the next Spider-Man 4 years seems like an awfully long time. It seems like they should make Spidey the de facto star of Sinister Six, having to fight all these guys. Otherwise it seems like a terrible movie premise. Just less (or no) focus on Peter Parker's life and more on the villains.

Are any of the villains (or stars that play them) a big draw themselves? Is there a de facto leader?

Uhhh yeah no. Like stated earlier this movie either won't happen or it'll bomb like Catwoman and Elktra.

My thought when I heard about this last night was that it would be an interesting way to move the Defenders / Heroes for Hire up to the big screen, without giving away the game too early. That way, they could do the big superhero team versus supervillain team brawl that hasn't really been attempted yet.
The closest I guess would have been the first X-men went they went up against the Brotherhood, but even that was a series of one on one fights, instead of the battle royal with powers.

If they make The Sinister Six Marvel's Suicide Squad; Baddies forced to do good so they can be released or not be killed.

At least it's different. Instead of the usual three act, villain gets created, villain beats up hero, hero wins in the end story, we'll get something offbeat. I don't think that it will be a Dark Knight or Avengers level of successful, but it might make for an entertaining and interesting movie.
