Product Description
With our release of well-received titles by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Tower of Power, we at Real Gone have become something of a home for the great horn bands of the late '60s and early 70s, and with our reissue of The Ides of March's classic Vehicle album on the 50th anniversary of the band s founding, we are bringing another one into the fold. The Ides began in a basement in the Chicago suburb of Berwyn on October 16th, 1964, and have stayed together ever since; only the Rolling Stones really rival them for longevity. And this album, Vehicle, was their commercial high-water mark; its title track went to #2 and the album to #55 on the 1970 charts. It's a happy collision (no pun intended) of the band s garage-y British pop influences and the more progressive sounds of Chicago and BS&T that were sweeping through FM radio at the time; our Expanded Edition features four single bonus tracks and notes by Richie Unterberger featuring quotes from the band's Jim Peterik and Larry Millas. Highly recommended!

1. Vehicle
2. Factory Band
3. The Sky Is Falling
4. Home
5. Wooden Ships/Dharma for One
6. Bald Medusa
7. Aire of Good Feeling
8. Time for Thinking
9. One Woman Man
10. Symphony for Eleanor (Eleanor Rigby)

Bonus Tracks:
11. High on a Hillside
12. Lead Me Home, Gently
13. Melody
14. Vehicle (single version)

(The most recent CD issue of Vehicle was via the Collectors' Choice label in 2006, with no bonus tracks.)

I've got a European (French, maybe?) CD release of the Vehicle album that I got in the early 2000's. As much as I love the title song and horn bands in general, I don't remember much about the other tracks. That album cover really creeps me out! What were they thinking?

That's what I've always thought too. Even as a horn band-loving kid I stayed away from this one. That cover just seemed wrong, especially considering the lyrics of the title track.

Hated this band-always found their sound ugly. Maybe because of the cover.

That or the song being used in the wretched Stallone film "Lock Up".

Jim Peterik went on to Survivor from this band.

I do love the lyric "I'm your vehicle baby". Have the song on comps so don't need the album, one of the true one hit wonders.

just an outstanding collection.

"tie-dye princess" was an FM late night staple back in the day around these parts.

I even thought I had this on a compilation called One Hit Wonders but I just checked and the actual title is Overnight Sensations. Same idea, though.

"Vehicle" appears on the 1970 volume of this Billboard series, from the early days of Rhino, not to mention the early days of CD collecting. I still find the sound on most of these to be top-notch.

I've always loved this album. I may be partial to it because a dear friend of mine named Ray Herr (RIP) used to be in this band. He even gave me the Gibson ES330 guitar that he is seen playing on the back cover. In any case, I particularly love the longer songs like "Wooden Ships" and "Eleanor Rigby". Ray was a guitar player in the band but he played bass on the song "Vehicle". Not a great bass performance granted, but the song has fond memories for me. I remember there was a lot of excitement in his home town of Arlington Heights, IL when the LP was being recorded. The local record store promoted the heck out of it. I used to pick Ray up and drive him to and from the train station most days when he was recording it downtown In Chicago. Really nice fellow who was under used in that band. He should have been their lead singer. He sang lead on some of the early singles like "Girls Don't Grow On Trees".

Nice remembrance Trebor, Thanks!

Collectors' Choice did a reissue of this album after the Rhino Handmade comp went out of print.

After about 10 years, I finally listened to this album again today (from Warner-France, in conjunction with Magic Records). I like it, though I much prefer Chase (probably because of the Maynard-like trumpets). The bass sounds a bit muddy on my copy. I wonder if Real Gone cleaned that up on the reissue. I've got "Lead Me Home, Gently", "Melody", and "Superman" as bonus tracks. Anyway, it's better than I remembered.
