The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions, when David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason played freely together at Britannia Row and Astoria studios. This was the first time they had done so since the Wish You Were Here sessions in the seventies. Those sessions resulted in The Division Bell, the band’s last studio album.

In 2013 David Gilmour and Nick Mason revisited the music from those sessions and decided that the tracks should be made available as part of the Pink Floyd repertoire. It would be the last time the three of them would be heard together. The band have spent the last year recording and upgrading the music, using the advantages of modern studio technology to create The Endless River.

The Endless River is a tribute to Rick Wright, whose keyboards are at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. It is a mainly instrumental album with one song, ‘Louder Than Words’, (with new lyrics by Polly Samson), arranged across four sides and produced by David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson.

The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled "The Big Spliff" that Nick Mason spoke about). Which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it. But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That's the song you see being worked on in the photo.

A series of recordings made during the sessions for 1994′s ‘The Division Bell,’ but never before released, are apparently the basis for a forthcoming Pink Floyd recording called ‘The Endless River.’

Dubbed ‘The Big Spliff’ at the time, the original tapes found David Gilmour, Nick Mason and the late Rick Wright — members of the final incarnation of Pink Floyd — performing a series of ambient, lyricless songs. Mason referenced them a decade ago in his book ‘Inside Out,’ saying “we eventually ended up with enough left-over material that we considered releasing it as a second album.” He compared the music to that of the Orb, with whom Gilmour later collaborated in 2010.

Durga McBroom-Hudson, a long-time backup singer with Pink Floyd, says she’s added vocals to these leftover tracks, as has Gilmour. “The recording did start during ‘The Division Bell’ sessions — and yes, it was the side project originally titled ‘The Big Spliff’ that Nick Mason spoke about, which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it,” McBroom-Hudson says, via Facebook. “It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks.” At that time, fans assumed they were at work on the next Gilmour solo album.

Both McBroom-Hudson and Pink Floyd recording engineer Andy Jackson, in a separate talk with the Floydian Slip news site, confirm that work has continued ever since on the secret project. Gilmour has expanded on the initially recorded backing vocals and, McBroom-Hudson says, “done a lead [vocal] on at least one of them.” Gilmour and Mason have made additional musical contributions, as well. “It is the extrapolation of the ‘Big Spliff’ — a bunch of jams from ['The Division Bell'] sessions that have had new overdubs done in the last year or so,” Jackson says.

Fans will remember that Pink Floyd played a lengthy, atmospheric track before concerts in support of ‘The Division Bell.’ It’s still unclear, however, if that recording — heard above — would be part of ‘The Endless River.’

Polly Samson, Gilmour’s wife and a lyricist for the post-Roger Waters edition of the band, earlier leaked the album title — which echoes a line from the last song on ‘The Division Bell.’ Samson also said the project is set for October release.

An official announcement could come as soon as Monday.

I'm VERY excited about this. The Division Bell is the best post-Wall Pink Floyd album and I'll be thrilled to hear any leftovers/outtakes.

Hmm: "The Big Spliff"...it's almost as though Pink Floyd specifically intends for this music to be enjoyed by people engaging in recreational drug use.

Anytime a group of Pink Floyd's stature releases an album of all new material I'm all in. This doesn't happen everyday y'all. If I were you I'd rejoice in the moment. This ain't just another Stones greatest hits release we're talking about here this is Pink Floyd. If this alone doesn't get you "fired up" then you've been listening to today's pop music for far too long it's corroded your ears. Just saying!

Yep-The Divison Bell was a very good album, though a bit too mellow and clean.

Nonetheless, I rate it highly.

I'd expect a similar sound her and maybe something tranquil and ambient.

The Waters camp will have their knives out, but that's so tiring.

A new Pink Floyd album? Could never have thought that. A tour? Now that I doubt, but...

With Wright gone, I think the only kind of valid Floyd tour in 2014/2015 would be Waters, Gilmour & Mason with Jon Carin (who's played for both Gilmour and Waters) on keyboards and whatever backing musicians they'd need to pull it off.

But while Waters & Gilmour may be friends again, Waters has stated that he likes being the boss, so I strongly doubt we'll ever see another PF tour. I got to see 'em in '88 and am very glad I did.

It's nice we'll be getting to hear some "new" Floyd music in 2014.

Maybe a super limited engagement tour like The Wall in 1980? One night only in Earl's Court perhaps? Even Waters couldn't piss everyone off that fast, LOL!

I think this shouldn't be a standalone release but should have been part of the 20th anniversary Division Bell box set. That would have made its high price tag a little easier to swallow.

Live 8 should have stayed their swan song.

I'm glad that it's a stand-alone. I didn't buy the box. I already have the album and don't need to buy it again.

I'll get the Division Bell 5.1 DVD and this new album. No need for an immersion box here.

Yes, that makes sense.

It reminds me of how The Final Cut started from tracks of the planned Wall film soundtrack Spare Bricks, and Gilmour complained at the time that if these tracks weren't good enough to be on the original Wall album, why would they be good enough to release now (in 1983)? Hmmm...

Why be skeptical?

It's new Pink Floyd music and if it was taken from past sessions so what?

I also am one of the few that loved The Final Cut.

Anyway, throwing this in with the Division Bell box would've been a lousy idea unless it was just the unreleased material.

I too loved The Final Cut. My point is what Gilmour bitched about with The Final Cut's origins is not that dissimilar with what he's doing with The Endless River.

I remember reading about this disc back during the release of the Immersion Editions, but for some reason I thought the sessions are tied into A Momentary Lapse of Reason rather than The Division Bell. I thought it might have been tied into an Immersion Edition of one of those titles, but will be happy to get the material however they chose to release it. While there is no way it could become a true Pink Floyd reunion album, it would be nice to see Roger Water's donate a lyric or maybe a background vocal. Just a gesture of graciousness, much like when David Gilmour played on Comfortably Numb pin London on Water's Wall tour.

I wonder if the solo album that is discussed in a separate thread is actually the work being done on this album. Somewhere up above, one of the insiders said people thought Gilmour was working on a solo project. I guess it's still possible that these are two separate projects. If not, it means Crosby and Nash are part of the Pink Floyd record!
