The story so far:

As we discussed in another thread, Marvel was apparently giving artists involved in 75th anniversary-related projects to not use the Fantastic Four characters in them:

Quote:
I do a number of sketch card projects for Upper Deck and Rittenhouse using Marvel characters. The most recent projects from both companies, one billed as Marvel 75th Anniversary, gave specific guidelines to NOT use any FF characters or supporting cast such as Dr Doom, Galactus, Surfer, Skrulls etc…

Rich Johnston did some digging and apparently Ike Perlmutter is displeased with Fox having the FF license:

Comic Book Resources and Bleeding Cool both agreed that Marvel may be planning to cancel all FF titles in the near future:

Quote:
CBR cannot confirm the exact future of "Fantastic Four" and "Ultimate FF," but has confirmed with multiple industry sources speaking on the condition of anonymity that a hiatus for the property is planned, at least as of recently. Plans can change, something that's potentially more likely now that the situation has been made public. The Fantastic Four characters are said to continue appearing in other Marvel titles, just not in a specifically branded "Fantastic Four" series.

Then Marvel announced the new event for 2015, which some folks are interpreting as a possible reboot due to the cosmic nature of Hickman's story:

That's old, the new rumor is, well, much more strange. Rich Johnston posted was directed to this post at CBR's forums:

Quote:
Most of you reading this will initially react to what i have to say with skepticism. I’m a brand new poster with no posts. That’s understandable. But i can only assure you that what i have to say in at this time and present is 100% true and will happen. I obviously can’t release my sources but it’s actually become an open secret within the marvel offices, and many are NOT happy. There have been a few leaks by various ”in the know” people who work at marvel within the community and on personal blogs over the last few days. Don’t be surprised when other sites/blogs start to come forward with more information soon. Obviously, these leaks on personal blogs have been redacted very quickly. Onto the dire news:

Marvel WILL be rebooting their entire line next summer, and they will be rebooting it without the X-Men. Without mutants at all. This includes Wolverine, Storm & Cyclops. Every mutant is gone. However, The Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver will be reintroduced as Inhumans. Although this won’t apply to any other X-Men related characters. Currently unsure what will happen with Namor. It’s currently unknown if any of the X-Men will ever return to the comics, but if they do it won’t be for quite a while.

The X-Men as we know them will cease to exist by the end of Axis. Whatever this means, the end result is that the X-Men are finished. For the second time in 3 years the Avengers office will be hijacking what’s going on in the X-Books to further their own stories, and once again Cyclops, as the face of the X-Men, will be portrayed as a villain. They’re having him go full Magneto and he will die at the end of the event in shame. Bendis is NOT happy about having his stories hijacked by the higher ups, but he’s going to be documenting Cyclops decent into insanity in the post ”Will” issues of Uncanny so his characterization in Axis fits. Once Cyclops dies and with Wolverine also dead the X-Men will be reunited under Havok’s leadership for a few short weeks in real time until the reboot, where all X-Books will be cancelled. The idea is, with Cyclops dead and buried, Marvel no longer have to worry about their ”mutant problem”. I can also confirm that the Scarlet Witch is the ”hero” of Axis.

I know it sounds too crazy to be true, but i assure you it all is. There are clues for those who know what to look for ”out there” already. I will update this thread as myself am updated.

Which was received with skepticism, even by Rich. Maybe it's just people trolling and making stuff up, but all the rumors have two components: 1) Marvel (or Disney) is displeased with Fox owning their licenses and 2) There may be some form of reboot coming.

It sounds stupid. Marvel shooting itself in the foot. It must be some kind of joke, right? Like a comic book company hiring the same people responsible for Heroes Reborn and tasking them with rebooting their whole universe. That stuff just doesn't happen.

I can imagine weirder things.

If Scarlet Witch is the hero of this storyline, they might be going to go all 'House of M' on the entire Marvel Universe or something. It does sound odd, though.

Really, they should employ me to revamp the MU.

I'm not saying my version of the MU would actually make any money for the faceless corporate types who own it, but there'd be about seven or eight people here at IMWAN who'd think it was Christmas. :)

I noticed that when I was reading the Infinity crossover collection that the Avengers cast was like the movie cast except for the additions of Wolverine, Spider-Woman and Spider-Girl, who had the leads in the story. Could they be increasing the roles of the latter two in the Marvel Universe in a similar shut-out with Spider-Man?

It was clear from the moment Marvel Studios started making profitable movies that Marvel comics would begin to reflect 'movieverse' continuity to some degree - which makes sense from a business viewpoint - but I'm surprised they're bothering with a reboot. I'd assumed that the movies were a hit on their own terms, but hadn't really drawn many new comic book readers to Marvel, and so things would continue largely unchanged in the comics books apart from maybe the look of the characters and stuff like that.

I think all the rumours about the Fantastic Four might have a germ of truth to them. Not so sure about the X-Men. It wouldn't surprise me if Disney's lawyers had taken a look at those old deals made with Fox and Sony and had seen potential problems with characters crossing over and thus being "fair game" according to the contracts.

"Reboot" is the comics' version of "New & Improved!"---different packaging, same product.

I just don't believe that Marvel would be willing to drop its X-Men line of books. Wolverine alone is a pretty big revenue generator. If they think comicbooks will effect X-Men box office or put pressure on Fox to give up rights to the property, they're so out of touch it's crazy.

I'll believe it when I see it.

It doesn't seem to make sense. I doubt that most of the people who see the movies read, or care about, the comics. I can see why they'd do stuff like have artists draw characters so they resemble the actors who play them, but I can't see them doing anything this drastic - unless it's just another "event" storyline or whatever.
