You guys haven't lived if you think Roy Thomas and Chris Claremont are or were the wordiest writers in comics. Steve Gerber, for example, used to put in double their verbal quota. The REAL wordiest writer was Don McGregor especially in the brilliant Panther's Rage.

I think that's because his style was more memorable, and he kept writing like that even though comics were becoming less wordy as time went by. Also, it's because he's one of the most famous and recognizable names in comics, so he's the one fans remember when they think of wordy comics. Wolfman doesn't get the same rep, and one of the reasons I've never made it through his Titans is because of those dull walls of text. Halfway through any issue I just give up on that shit and go read an awesome Claremont comic instead.

I conditioned my self to ignore those and I don't think I missed any of the story as a result. Getting back to Thomas. I do think that he could be extremely wordy, but I never tired of reading it and most of it was needed. In a plot-first, Marvel-style process, where the story is so dependent on the penciler, Thomas did a great job of filling in necessary storytelling gaps in the right tone for a superhero story.
