Chrissie Hynde to release debut solo album 'Stockholm'
Chrissie Hynde is set to release her debut solo album 'Stockholm' on June 9.
The Pretenders frontwoman recorded the album in Stockholm with Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John, who produced, co-wrote and played guitar on the record. Discussing the release, Hynde commented: "I wanted to make a power pop album you could dance to – Abba meets John Lennon... I think life is serious, and you should take it seriously, but in rock n roll either have a laugh or don't come to the party... so much of rock n roll has become what I would call Glory Rock, with family values. It's the irreverence in rock that was always the turn on".
Listen to 'Dark Sunglasses' above. The single will be released on April 21, and a limited 7" edition of 'Dark Sunglasses'/'Torniquet (Cynthia Ann)' will come out for Record Store Day on April 19.

I think the fact that this is a "solo" album is kind of amusing, because, to me, all Pretenders albums since the mid '80s have been more or less solo albums from my point of view.

My thoughts exactly, Chris. Most if not all Pretenders album covers for the past several years have featured Ms. Hynde alone, so I don't really get this.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the thread title.

Yep, I thought the same thing as well. Once Martin Chambers was out of the band it was clear that "Pretenders" was just a name she kept using (and rightly so) to keep her career going. I'm sure it was easier to sell records & book gigs with the band name, and most people probably couldn't care less who's playing with her anyway. I love Chrissie and I'm looking forward to her new album. It's coming out the week after my birthday so I'll be treating myself to a gift.
Has anyone else heard this album she did in 2010 as part of "J.P., Chrissie and the Fairground Boys"? It came & went without a trace. I played it a few times when it came out and liked it a lot, but don't remember much about it now.

I'm in a library, so I can't listen to the song posted, but if the album were hugely experimental or something (think: Vedder/ukulele) I could understand such a distinction. Is it?

Funny, because I said the same thing about this earlier today (liked it a lot, don't remember much now). A nice memory I have with this album is that it was given away when she appeared at the Grammy Museum, and she even signed autographs later

Bump: Added pre-order details for Stockholm to the first post. (I've also added the link to our original thread for the Fidelity album to the appropriate posts in this thread, in case you guys want to revisit the 2010 discussion of that album.)

very good album, but her voice is just sightly buried in the mix, with that voice, it should be the focal point.
My copy of the CD should be arriving tomorrow. I'll let you know if I have the same issue with the mix. I completely agree that her voice should always be up-front.
