Wachowskis' 'Jupiter Ascending' Abruptly Bumped From July to February 2015

At the 11th hour, Lana and Andy Wachowski's sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending is being pushed back from July 18 to Feb. 6, 2015.

As a result, Liam Neeson's action movie Run All Night will now need to find a different home. That film had been set to open Feb. 6; a new date has yet to be announced.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow co-financed Jupiter Ascending, which stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. Insiders say the $150 million movie needed more special effects work.

Still, the move is a stunning one, considering Jupiter Ascending was to have been released in a little over six weeks. To boot, the February corridor is one of the quietest of the year, although Hollywood studios and exhibitors are trying to change that. Warners released Lego Movie in February, when it opened to a massive $69.1 million. It went on to gross $461.9 million worldwide.

Bad buzz likely sparked concern on the Warner Bros. lot, where the Wachowski siblings had longtime ties to former film studio chief Jeff Robinov. They also made The Matrix films for Warners.

Jupiter Ascending is an ambitious film starring Kunis as a lowly house cleaner who learns from an elf-eared, alien warrior who travels to earth (Tatum) that she is a galactic princess.

That means it's another bomb by them. February is the dead zone for movies.

Yup. I know that blockbuster films get released all year instead of just summer. I also know that many years ago, The Silence of the Lambs was released in February. However, that was one film, and expecting a movie bumped to a February release to become a box office success and major Oscar winner is like expecting the New York Jets to win the Super Bowl again. It might happen, but the odds are against it.

Bummer.

I quite like the Wachowskis. I like the two Matrix sequels and I thought Cloud Atlas was magnificent. I'm now even considering watching Speed Racer, and that movie seems like pure, undiluted poison to me.

I was looking forward to watching this soon.

I enjoyed Speed Racer. It was very much a live-action version of the cartoons, and the casting was spot-on.

February doesn't automatically mean it's a bad film, either, only that the studio either doesn't have as much faith in it or it's a consequence of scheduling dictated by other factors like here, they still have extra FX or to do.

It could have been released next week (a very weak weekend for opening movies) so it can't be scheduling. No big movies other than Transformers coming up.
It's probably another incoherent mess by the Wachowski's.

It's probably another criminally underrated and brilliant effort by the Wachowski's.

Probably.

Hey, we finally agree on a movie not produced by Marvel Studios!

Probably.

They really fucked themselves by making the final Matrix movie suck.

Agreed. Except for the part about the final Matrix movie sucking, that's spot on.

It was so corny. I mean, they all are, but it was a lot of cheese with no cool bits in there.

You two are agreeing far too often. It's getting a bit weird, to be honest.

I hated Speed Racer, and I hated V For Vendetta, for very different reasons.

However, I really liked Cloud Atlas, which puts me in the minority.

Judging by the trailers, Jupiter Ascending looks like yet another seriously overstuffed outer space adventure. I thought I was watching coming attractions for Ender's Game again.

I'm saddened by this:

I've liked all of their movies, including Jupiter Ascending, but it's clear that WB can't keep giving them money.

They were given more chances than most people get.

I'm beginning to think the first Matrix was luck.

This was a movie with everything except superheroes. While it had a lot in it, it wasn't very deep. It was more like an amusement park ride than a movie. But I liked it.

It's nice to see Meg Griffin finally getting a bigger part.

I liked Speed Racer but never saw Cloud Atlas.

These guys are the Obiwan to Zack Snyder's Luke Skywalker. They should have taken his route -- done adaptations of successful existing material rather than try to create another Matrix (or whatever they're doing).

They did that with Speed Racer but it's not exactly a hot property. They should have tried to get in on a superhero franchise or something.
