Steve Miller Band Releases 'The Joker Live' for 40th Anniversary
New record features unreleased live versions of group's classic 1973 album

The Steve Miller Band is releasing The Joker Live today to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band's hit album and titular number one single, "The Joker," via Kobalt's AWAL digital distibution platform.

Available on iTunes and Amazon, the album features brand new live recordings of every track on The Joker and coincides with the Steve Miller Band's upcoming summer tour.

"When several friends and colleagues reminded me that it was the 40th birthday of The Joker album, I smiled—and started playing the whole album’s songs live again," Steve Miller said in a press release. "And at the end of the last tour realized we had a great new record that we wanted to share with our fans. We hope you like it as much as we did playing and recording it."

The Steve Miller Band kick off their 41-date tour with Journey and Tower of Power tonight, May 15th, at the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Chula Vista, California and will criss-country the country before ending at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center on August 1st. The tour was recently included in Rolling Stone's 40 Hottest Summer Tours. You can get ticket information and check out a full list of tour dates over on the band's website.

If it's ever on CD, I'll buy it. I saw the tour.

Maybe we should 'remind' him that it's been 'almost 40 years' since he planned to release Journey from Eden and Rock Love on CD.......maybe that would do it.....

This is really good. I tend to be underwhelmed by SMB albums, other than the hits. These songs are much better live.

The nature of this release makes me wonder if it might actually be a CD-R. If an ICEr decides to take a chance on this, please let the rest of us know whether it's a proper CD or not.

I ordered the CD version a few days ago. Got an email saying it's been delayed and I should have it on May 27. I'll let you all know.

I can confirm that this is a Silver disc and not CD-R.

Are the graphics as hideous as those shown on the Amazon website?

Oh yeah. I just played it and can confirm graphics are nothing special. It's in a digipack, gray and just text on the cover. Back cover has songs and writing credits and a color photo of the halloween mask worn on the Joker album cover. Inside the CD is a list of performing credits. Under the CD and plastic container is a black and white non-descript photo of I assume to be Miller. Budget release all the way around...

Back in those glorious days when Edsel had those the two missing Steve Miller cds scheduled for release, they were also going to include The Joker as the third in that particular cycle. Well, as the projected release date came closer, out of nowhere comes an announcement of a 40th Anniversary reissue of The Joker. Well, to my regret, the Edsel releases were dropped. And, surprise, surprise, nothing was ever heard of that 40th Anniversary release either. This is a long-winded lead in to my new conspiracy theory that the 40th release was a feint to block Edsel and that this live set is actually an artifact that might have been used in said release. Sort of like the live concert dvd appended to the anniversary edition of Fly Like An Eagle. Or possibly Capital itself dropped the release and Steve decided to make a few bucks off of the bonus material. Or maybe Steve did just put it out as a gesture to the fans and I've been reading too many mysteries lately.

After sampling some of these songs, I think I'll just stick with the double-cd King Biscuit Flower Hour Steve Miller with concerts from 1973 and 1976. There's enough good stuff on that release to keep me coming back. Some of the songs I sampled on this new one seem to take them from upbeat to too fast. And I'm all out of speed.
