Led by Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane, Spanky and Our Gang had a folk-pop sound oft-compared to the Mamas and the Papas, but their harmonies and arrangements were, if anything, a little more sophisticated and varied, incorporating pop and jazz influences (while admittedly lacking a songwriter of the stature of John Phillips). "Lazy Day" and "Like To Get To Know You" were also top 20.

Forgot about Lazy Day. I've never heard the other that i am aware of, & I was listening to lots of AM radio in that period.

I just thought "Complete Singles" was a bit of an oxymoron.

"Give A Damn" also got airplay, although some stations banned it because of the title and subject matter.

I think Spanky and Our Gang are one of the great groups of the 60's. Spanky McFarlane has a voice that can belt out the blues one minute and sound so vulnerable the next it can almost break your heart. The other guys in the group were no slouches either, and their records are filled with inventive arrangements and production. Their Anything You Choose/Without Rhyme or Reason album is a forgotten classic.

I do remember the hits but had nothing else.
This is a must- have for me.

Sunday Morning was always my favorite - not such a hit but my favorite never-the-less.

I splurged and picked up Hip-O Select's Complete Mercury Recordings which included all their albums (including their "Greatest Hit(s)", along with the single a- and b- sides. I won't be getting this, but it looks real good.

Completely unrelated: I know a guy who'll swear up and down that Spanky & Our Gang was a hoax band - that they're really the Jefferson Airplane masquerading as a bunch of hippies (because the Jefferson Airplane weren't hippies, ya know?)

As far as conspiracy theories go, I suppose it's pretty harmless.
