I've only ever heard The Who's. Don't have any desire to hear the others, especially not Hillary Duff's (!)

I'm not going to play that video but I imagine it's worse than Brittany Spears doing "I Love Rock 'n' Roll".

Only the Who. I saw Hilary Duff live when my kids are little. She changed the line to "Hope I don't die before I get old." Seriously. I talked to Michael Manring (best bassist this side of the Ox) that week and told him about it, and he said, "Is that even legal?"

Yeah, why cover the song if you're going to change the meaning of it?

The one from the Smothers Brothers TV show? To clarify - I meant the one later in the film, where they did it like a slow blues; Daltrey is in full 'tassle' mode and Townshend is playing a Les Paul.

According to Pete, that's how he originally envisioned the song, as a Jimmy Reed-type blues.

I ventured to listen to Green Day's version, since I'm kind of a fan but, predictably, the cover was unremarkable.

Pete's original demo for "My Generation" was released as a flexi-disc with initial 1982 printings of "Maximum R & B" by Richard Barnes. It has yet to be officially released elsewhere. The demo is slightly slower than the eventual studio version, but serves to indicate the extent to which Pete was able to bring completed songs into the studio--musically, everything is there, from the backing vocals to the instrumental break, except for Entwistle and Moon; the only lyrical distinction is Roger's stuttering. Pretty amazing--Pete was, at most, twenty years old at the time.
