Description
Shadows In The Night is Bob Dylan's newest studio album, and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012's worldwide hit Tempest. Featuring ten tracks, the Jack Frost-produced album is the 36th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012's worldwide hit Tempest.

Regarding the repertoire on this album, Bob Dylan commented, "It was a real privilege to make this album. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That's the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don't see myself as covering these songs in any way. They've been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day."

Bob Dylan's five previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album. Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies. Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while the artist s globe-spanning concert tours of the past few years have heavily emphasized that album's singular repertoire. Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

This is a nice and unexpected surprise.

And wow- I just listened to "Full Moon and Empty Arms". What happened to Bob's voice? It sounds like it's (mostly) back.

Relatively speaking, it might be Bob's strongest vocal performance in years. Relatively speaking.

Always great to hear that new Dylan is on the way.

Sounds nice! The instrumental backing works beautifully. And I agree about his vocal performance. With the last album, though the material was excellent, I had trouble listening because of how ragged his voice sounded. I'm eager to hear more of the new album.

I've gotten used to his ragged voice. That's why this vocal performance was such a nice surprise.

In all seriousness, I tend to think that his recent singing voice and singing style is something of an affectation. A few years back he sang an a capella version of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" on his "Theme Time Radio Hour" that was free of all that raspiness.

By Andy Greene

Without any warning or anticipation, Bob Dylan posted a cover of Frank Sinatra's 1945 hit "Full Moon and Empty Arms" on his website, the first song from an upcoming new album by the 72-year-old musician.

"This track is definitely from a forthcoming album due later on this year," a spokesperson for the singer tells Rolling Stone. While the rep wouldn't confirm an album title, Dylan posted an image of himself with the phrase "Shadows in the Night." With its distinct vertical bars and crisp, minimalist text, the image appears to be in the style of graphic designer Reid Miles' iconongraphic covers for jazz label Blue Note.

Dylan doesn't stray too far from Sinatra's original track, though his version replaces the string section with guitars. "Full Moon and Empty Arms" was written by Ted Mossmann and Buddy Kaye and based around Sergei Rachmaninoff's 1901 composition "Piano Concert No. 2 in C Minor." The song has been covered by everyone from Robert Goulet to The Platters, but Sinatra's rendition remains the most famous. Dylan's last few albums were strongly inspired by popular music from this era.

While Bob Dylan is without peer as a songwriter/poet, he brings nothing to cover songs - raspy voice, smooth voice, or whatever. I'm not sure what he's aiming for really. It's been half a century since he's interpreted someone else's song in an interesting way.

Maybe these are just songs that he enjoys singing. He has the means to put them onto a record and then to put that record up for sale. I don't think that he's aiming for anything else.

2015 release. No date yet.

Bob Dylan has confirmed that he will release a new album next year called Shadows In The Night. There’s no details about the record yet, but it seems likely that it will be a covers album that contains his cover of Frank Sinatra’s “Full Moon And Empty Arms” that came out earlier this year. When that track was released in May, Dylan also revealed the above album artwork. The Basement Tapes boxset that will be released next week apparently has a note inside that says, “Bob Dylan, Shadows In The Night, new album coming in 2015.” Dylan’s last studio album was 2012′s Tempest.

According to this article on Billboard, the album will be a Sinatra covers album.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/ ... night-2015

There's already plenty of "new" Bob Dylan releases at hand -- a six-disc set of Basement Tapes recordings hits Nov. 4 and the star-studded Lost on the River collection drops Nov. 11 -- but next year, it looks like we're getting the real deal.

Stereogum reports a note inside The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 confirms new album news. The note simply reads, "Bob Dylan, Shadows In The Night, new album coming in 2015."

Earlier in 2014, Dylan unveiled a cover of Frank Sinatra's "Full Moon and Empty Arms." A source confirms to Billboard that the new album consists entirely of Frank Sinatra covers.

This sneaky revelation method isn't unlike what Sleater-Kinney did earlier this month, when they revealed their reformation by including a blank vinyl disc (boasting a new song) in their recently released box set.

Dylan should do a Byrds covers album.

New album "Shadows In The Night" Out Feb. 3

Columbia Records announced today that Bob Dylan's new studio album, Shadows In The Night, will be released on February 3, 2015. Featuring ten tracks, the Jack Frost-produced album is the 36th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012’s worldwide hit Tempest.

Upon Columbia’s announcement of the album’s forthcoming release, Bob Dylan commented, “It was a real privilege to make this album. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

As Columbia Records Chairman Rob Stringer explains, “There are no strings, obvious horns, background vocals or other such devices often found on albums that feature standard ballads. Instead, Bob has managed to find a way to infuse these songs with new life and contemporary relevance. It is a brilliant record and we are extremely excited to be presenting it to the world very soon.”

How about Bob doing a Neil covers album and Neil doing a Bob covers album. This should be interesting.
