Wow, needless to say some Prince deluxe editions are long overdue. I didn't know if we would ever see any considering the history between Prince and Warner Bros. Hopefully this is the first of many, many more to come. This is one of the few artists that could release superb deluxe editions for almost every one of his albums. We'll see if somebody at Warner Bros. figures a way to mess it all up.

I'd think there's enough in the vaults (including a few unreleased b-sides, a lot of unreleased tracks & a TON of live material that we won't see many covers, & any would likely be "produced" by Prince (meaning he has 150% control of the recording.)
Gheck, the Purple Rain concert film has never seen an official dvd release. USA (& UK??) VHS & Argentina gray area dvd only afaik.

The three unreleased gems here (that I know of) would be Wednesday, Father's Song and Electric Intercourse. Wednesday and Father's Song were on early configurations of the album so completed versions of these songs likely exist. The short piano piece that was in the movie was part of Father's Song (where Prince plays that piano when finding his the sheet music). Electric Intercourse was recorded at the same 1st Avenue show that Purple Rain, Baby I'm a Star, etc was recorded at and then overdubs were completed but it was dropped from the album. So all three of these songs were intended for Purple Rain and probably exist in a quality suitable for release. I really hope we see these but it's probably a longshot.
There are also a bunch of other rumored tracks from this time period but (1) who knows if they really exist (2) if they do exist was the recording ever completed (3) did Prince ever intend for any of these songs to be Purple Rain songs. As much as I'd love to hear unreleased music, I would prefer them to limit the material included on this deluxe set to be material Prince intended to use for Purple Rain at one point or another. We could always get a Crystal Ball Vol 2 down the road (and hopefully it would be much better than Vol 1).
I'm guessing the final track listing will look something like this:
CD1: Original Album
CD2: When Doves Cry (Edit) 17 Days Let's Go Crazy (Edit) Erotic City (Edit) Let's Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix) Erotic City (Make Love Not War Erotic City Come Alive) Purple Rain (Edit) God God (Love Theme From Purple Rain) I Would Die 4 U (Single Version) Another Lonely Christmas I Would Die 4 U (Extended Version) Another Lonely Christmas (Extended Version) Take Me With U (Edit) Baby I'm a Star (Edit) Running time for this disc would be a bit under 78 minutes so it should all fit. I think it would capture pretty much all the B-side releases/mixes with the exception of a couple additional edits of Purple Rain (there is an edit, and a radio edit, and a long radio edit, etc).
If Wednesday, Father's Song and Electric Intercourse was tacked onto the end of the first disc, this would qualify as a dream release for me.

If I was the one being refered to I would definitely not consider myself to be a Prince expert. I didn't even have any real appreciation for his music until about 1993. But I definitely am a fan and would love to get all those B-sides that I missed in the 80's, so I've looked around and tried to find out what is out there. But while I'm a fan, I'm not a big enough fan to want to shell out considerable dollars for used, beat-up 12" singles and CD singles...so I'm quite pleased to see that Prince and Warner Bros have apparently worked things out and are going to get some of this stuff back in circulation.
http://www.princevault.com is an excellent reference to those new to Prince who want to find out more about his vast catalog (released and unreleased). I probably get about 70% of my information from there and the rest comes from various Prince fansites and message boards.

I remember back in the day I would buy every single the day it came out to have the b-sides immediately. I think Parade was the last album I did that with. Of course, a number of those b-sides ended up on the 3 cd set. I had mixed feelings: on the one hand it was great to have them all on cd in one place, in on the other it was like all my hunting had been for nothing! Went through the same with Bowie & the Rykos.
My fav Prince B's would have to be Another Lonely Xmas, Alexa De Paris, Erotic City, She's Always in My Hair, Tears In My Eyes (We Are The World Version) & probably Irresistible Bitch & How Come You Don't call me Anymore from 1999.
I think the end for me was Love Or Money, that was god awful.

This is interesting (& likely related): HD Tracks was carrying very nice hi-res flat transfers of everything from the debut-Parade. They're ALL out of print in hi-res. I was able to get all except the self titled & Dirty Mind when they were available. As 2 of there Jackson Browne's (Lawyers In Love & Hold Out) also went oop. I wonder if HDTracks Warner licenses are for a limited time, like the Mosaic Jazz label, or............?

From USA Today...
Quote:
Prince4Ever will be followed by a deluxe, remastered edition of Purple Rain — the original soundtrack to his 1984 film of the same name — to be released in early 2017. That edition will be accompanied by a second album of previously unreleased material. The label says these plans were already underway and approved by Prince before he died on April 21.

Here's hoping for a hi-res version; & one that sounds as good as the hi-res Purple Rain we already have (Their was an official 8 album series of For You - Parase released at one time through HD Tracks that have superb sound. I suspect the next batch will be at least partially compressed & won't sound as good; though if we have an entire disc of PR wera rarities, it would still be a must buy for me).

I liked Purple Rain songs but those cheesy 80s drum machine drum machine tracks always annoyed the crap out of me. I'd love to see a 2nd CD of the songs with the '80s' mixed out of them.
