Doot already proved in the other thread that those who believe music was good I'm the 70s are hopelessly drowning in nostalgia, and there is no need to do that with comics, it's self evident, but the movies? The movies were great.
Search your hearts. It's true.

"True, False or Jeff" sounds like it could be the title of a game show.

What are we calling awesome? There were landmark greats made in the 70s. Of the list in the other thread, I liked all of them, except the Godfather, which I recognize is on me, not the film itself, because it's clearly well done, with great actors and an epic story. It just bored me; not my thing. Jaws isn't bad either, I just find the shark lacking. The atmosphere and creepiness is otherwise great. The problem with 70s cinema is much of it has that "made for TV" vibe to it, with cheesy clangy soundtracks. A great example is Omega Man. If you take the 70s soundtrack out you might have something worth watching.

In one post you've slammed The Godfather and The Omega Man (the two edges of the spectrum of 70's movie awesomeness). I wash my hands and feet of you.

Here's a big reason why what Rafael said is true. Think of all the movies that won Academy awards for Best Picture in the 1970's. As in every other decade, there is disagreement and there are some films that a lot of film buffs say shouldn't have won. But almost all of those films which DID win are good. Annie Hall is still a beloved movie nearly 40 years after its release, even if it isn't as popular as A New Hope. Kramer vs. Kramer still holds up as a good movie, even if more people rent Apocolyse Now today. The only Best Picture winner of the 70's which hardly anybody ever watches anymore is The Deer Hunter. In terms of sheer quality, can any decade of Oscar winners compare with the following movies?
Patton The French Connection The Godfather The Sting The Godfather Part II One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Rocky Annie Hall The Deer Hunter Kramer vs. Kramer

It occurred to me that some people might get technical and count decades in years ending with "1." In that case, The Deer Hunter would be joined by Ordinary People. At the time, a lot of people were amazed that Robert Redford, movie star, could direct a good movie that didn't have himself in front of the cameras. I don't know if this film would have been acclaimed as Best Picture material if a no-name director with no friends in Hollywood and no established reputation had made it. But on the other hand, 1980 was the year of two truly great films---The Empire Strikes Back and Raging Bull. So either way you slice it, 1970-1979 or 1971-1980, it was a very good decade for movies.

If you take the 70s soundtrack out you might have something worth watching. I don't think it's fair to call out Omega Man as an example of a trend -- it is notorious for being shot and directed in a TV style. The director was a TV director, before and after, almost exlusively. Film critics point that particular thing about Omega Man -- it is an extreme outlier in that category (Hollywood films that seem like TV productions).

Why is The Omega Man cited as an example? It's like writing about The Last Starfighter in a book of 1980's science fiction films and ignoring Aliens or Blade Runner. Nobody disputes that there were a lot of bad movies made in the 70's, but there were also a lot of GOOD films, and there were more good films made then (coming directly out of Hollywood instead of independent films) then there are today.
Here's another example, although technically this isn't a 70's film, but an early 80's film---The Verdict. Do you realize there once was a time when it was NORMAL for Hollywood to release a drama film that isn't aimed at the Oscars in the winter, spring, and fall? Today, a movie like The Verdict would ONLY be made as an independent film, because blockbuster films come out THE ENTIRE YEAR, not just the summer anymore.

I was not arguing that those films I listed should have won, but I am saying it's remarkable how many of the films that DID film are actually still good, and many of them are great. Rocky is one of those great films. I have no problem with people who say that Taxi Driver is better because they're probably right. But I think that film is the ONLY other film in 1976 that conceivably deserved to take the Best Picture Oscar away from Rocky, and the difference isn't as big as some critics make it out to be. Network, in my opinion, is the most overrated movie of the 1970's.

So the line up is that good, yet still the 70's had more to offer.
