Quote: Comics-wise, you wouldn't see the end of DC, but it'd be close. Marvel would begin publishing them under a new DC imprint, because there would be no gain into adding them to the Marvel comics universe. But unless Disney allowed Marvel to double its workforce — which would never happen — the new DC would by necessity be a smaller Marvel imprint. DC would get cut down from 52 issues to somewhere between a dozen and 20 or their biggest comics, meaning Superman, Wonder Woman, a few Batman comics, the Justice Leagues, and that's it. The popular DC characters would keep getting published, and everything else would fall by the wayside.
Movie-wise, not much would change. Disney would continue pumping out Batman and Superman movies, although they'd probably more in the "fun action-adventure" style of the Marvel movies than WB's current Chris Nolan-esque "grim n' gritty" template. I'd argue that would probably serve DC's superheroes even better than it currently does Marvel's, but hey, maybe not. But the plus side is that since Disney doesn't have the weird mental block that Warner Bros. has, they could probably manage to get a Wonder Woman movie, a decent Green Lantern movie, and a Justice League movie assembled in short order. And hey, these movies might actually be based on recognizable comics, since Disney doesn't seem to think that the source material is incapable of providing good stories.
I really don't think there'd be as much Marvel/DC crossover as one might think — sure, there might be a few comics that occasionally blend the two, but I really think Disney/Marvel would keep them separate. There's no benefit into bringing Superman, Batman and the rest of DC heroes into the Marvel universe, because it would only dilute both sets of heroes. Better to keep them separate, so neither Superman nor Iron Man have to play second fiddle to anybody. http://io9.com/what-would-happen-if-dis ... 1556906283Agree or disagree?

I think they'd blend it all together, personally. Not too tightly, but we'd see a lot of crossing over. Marvel has no problem with having Iron Man not play second fiddle to Thor, or other high powered characters. They just don't address why Thor isn't around in solo stories. It's not an issue. But WB would never sell them, even if they don't know how to use them, and have Dan Didio and Bob Harras.

It wouldn't be overnight, but they'd blend into the same product under two different mastheads. From a management point of view, it makes no sense to have two sets of "studios" and managers overseeing two sets of the exact same product. And since there's a history of crossovers between the two universes, we would eventually see a shared movie universe. It would be too good for them to pass on.
It's like DC's main universe and their Vertigo imprint. They had two different tones going for a while, but eventually they overlapped a great deal in tone and content.

I don't think Marvel would blend them unless they had the rights forever -- they love printing trades and it would be copyright hell to print material with the DC heroes if their contract wasn't renewed.
Personally, and this would never happen, I think it'd be a great opportunity for the rivalry between the two companies to be moved aside so that they could cater to different audiences. Make the DC line the "all ages" one with light continuity and the Marvel line the "teen" one with the heavier continuity and such. Adult readers, of course, will just continue to read Savage Dragon.

Wouldn't anti-trust laws keep the two companies separate? I know they let the NFL and AFL merge, but they didn't let Staples and Office Depot do the same.

I'm sure that Jean Loring and Matt Murdock have done their due diligence and have assured Disney that this is all legal.

If the Big Two were to become the Big One, prices would go up. That's why I am saying that I don't think this sort of acquisition would be ALLOWED to take place. Image Comics buying Boom! comics is one thing. Marvel buying DC is another.

The question assumes it could happen, Ed.

Eddy... The near monopoly already exists in comics. It's on the distribution side, not the publishing side. The Department of Justice investigated Diamond's monopoly and did nothing.
The DC/Marvel Monolith would have no way of legally preventing other publishers from publishing or distributing comics. If they tried that, then they'd come under the thumb of the law.

Except a) What Robert said; Diamond is the monopoly, not either DC or Marvel, and b)The biggest selling comic is from another company, and there are plentiful non big-2 comics peppering the top sellers. In so many words, that's why I posted my Mal gif; there were too many "but..but..." responses to your statement. It's just not based in reality (as if the premise of this thread were, lol).

Everything would be rainbows and unicorns and sunshine if Disney buys DC.

I think Disney would just let things carry on pretty much as they are, DC and marvel as separate entities, no reason to merge them.

There couldn't be any more inter-company crossovers.

Agree completely. In many ways DC is a much better fit for Disney than Marvel. I can imagine amazing theme parks etc far better suited to the all ages friendly DC etc.

How about a variation of this topic's question. It would not have happened because WB sees DC Comics as a major cash cow, but what WOULD have happened if Disney had bought DC Comics INSTEAD of Marvel? Would Disney be handling the DC Comics movies differently, or is the major difference that if you take "The Trinity" (Supes, Bats, WW) out of the equation, Marvel's superheroes are more popular than DC's?

That's interesting. I can see more possibility with stuff like merchandising and cartoons, maybe more tv shows except for the big three. How about a Disney movie, starring Diana as a child? She could be the next Disney princess. Or even better, the original Donna Troy origin as a Disney movie. Wonder-Girl.

Marvel Studios already had their mojo going before Disney bought them, so I don't really credit Disney with much of that success.

The successful way of dealing with their film started before Marvel was acquired by Disney. Alan is right in that Disney's biggest contribution so far has probably been marketing and financial support. To say Disney has been wholly responsible for the Marvel film success would mean they're also the sole reason for ESPN's success or Pixar computer animation.
