we all know what "doors territory" is by now.

can you name a band that has reached doors territory?

the who:

11 studio albums

12 compilations - based on wikipedia and counting those that i sure were released in the u.s altogether there are 23 compilations on the wikipedia list!

the doors:

6 studio albums (less than 4 hours of music)

23 comps

i don't know about that one, possibly though if you count all the imports

i looked it up (wikipedia again, i know it's not the best source, but it is the easiest)

25 studio albums

24 total comps - 14 u.s. as far as i can tell

Yes and ELP have both been comp'd to death. I love both bands but I never look beyond the original albums and maybe one box set from each.

Moody Blues. Especially if you count imports.

To be honest, the major labels have gotten so budget compilation friendly that one could easily create a HUGE list of artists that have a >1:1 compilation-to-original ratio. It's not just the old warhorses anymore.

What about the 2002 comp, Stars Die: The Delerium Years 1991–1997? Of course that covers the early years, before most people were aware of them, and it's a fine collection.

Paul Simon seems to alternate between releases of new material and then a new compilation.

Geff, I mentioned that one above as well. I'm guessing John was referring to a compilation of their work since they became better known (pretty much from their major label debut, In Absentia, and after). There's a killer comp waiting to be put together there, although every one of those albums is essential to me. And In Absentia in surround sound is thing to behold.

Hendrix must have a compilation-to-album ratio of 30-to-1 by now.

Yes, the world has tired of too many Clannad comps.

That was just on CNN. :p
