Wow. What an unexpected treat. It looks like this could be a great joy to see. Now, Dave, how about officially releasing the albums on CD?
Agreed. I'd be willing to be bet that the original albums will come swiftly on the heels of this documentary. That would be really cool.
I'd be tempted to take that bet...
From what I remember from here and other sources is that Dave owns the rights to the complete catalog, and seldom if ever releases anything. I believe a few years back he put out another version of the DC5 Story, which is essentially a 2CD greatest hits package.
It appears that's now OOP as well. Looking at Amazon shows high prices for it.
About the only place you can get the individual albums is thru boots.
I think Dave is very well invested and doesn't need the money, but still what about the rest of the band that's still alive - and their families? and the fans?
I seem to remember an article many years ago stating that he was willing but apparently the licensing fees he wanted were outrageous and made the project not financially viable.
Whatever the situation it would be nice to put out clean, remastered versions of all their material...
Maybe sometime after Steve Miller release his full catalog....

I was just listening to the Glad All Over album (from a downloaded bootleg) and I'm wondering if DC ever faced any legal action over No Time To Lose being a straight ripoff of Twist & Shout. I mean, the second verse of both songs share 3 of the 4 lines.
The song is credited to Clark/Ryan. Dunno who Ryan is. But, much like Elvis & The Colonel, DC often bought the rights to list himself as songwriter from the true author.

I don't remember the exact story, but I know Ron Ryan was a friend of Clarks and wrote a lot of material for the band. The agreement was that Ryan would get royalties while Clark could take songwritng credit . Ryan claimed that Clark was screwing him and eventually sued for royalties and got co-credit. Clark also took a credit on songs written by the other band members. Clark, when he released the DC5 catalog to I Tunes, left off the individual albums any of the songs for which Ryan had gotten a songwriting credit. Thus, the albums available on I Tunes are not presented the way they were originally released. Just, it seems, another dick move by Clark.

I'm less concerned by Ron Ryan's royalty claims than I am by whether Phil Medley and Bert Berns wanted some. It's a truly shameless plagiarism.

No, it's not on yet, but sometimes pledge break season can last a long time. I have no factual info on this, just speculating...
The March fundraising will be over in about two weeks here in DC, so this broadcast won't be involved with that. Since they are also releasing the show on video the same day, I doubt they would do fundraising during the broadcast, either. But, you never know.

During fundraising/pledge breaks, PBS station will often offer premiums/gifts for contributions. Many times it's a DVD of the special programming they air during the fundraising period and, for music programs, a CD featuring the performers/artists. So, we can hope that a CD of DC5 will be available for a pledge.

Agree Momo; I usually spring for (a pledge) once a year to help out a great cause. If a unique CD is part of a package I may make it the one for 2014.

Here's hoping it's at retail, as the pledges are really expensive.

From the PBS press release, it looks to me like it will be retail.

It's now up at Amazon. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to provide the link. Thanks.
