Please allow me to introduce myself. ....and since today is the hockey trade deadline and martin Brodeur might move, this song seems appropriate.
This week's song was suggested by Paulo.....thanks for coming up with most of the other versions too (less work for me). I didn't realize there were this many covers.......some of the later ones are pretty interesting.

This is another easy one where the original is without question the right call, IMO. Now if you did a poll on different ways the Stones have played it live over the years, I might have a hard time picking one.

The Stones.
As for the live versions, there have been some good ones--but what I really liked were those remixes of the studio version which came out about ten years ago or so.

The Stones, of course. And if we're getting into specific versions, I would go with the original studio version followed by the Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out version. Always loved the guitar work between Richards & Taylor on that one.

I have never heard a non-Stones version of that song.

The GnR version is ok, but not different enough to really make much of a difference, so.... Yeah. The Stones.

The Rolling Stones own this one in every way, shape, and form, to the extent that I can hardly believe anybody else had the nerve to record it.

I'd either rank GNR (similar to the Stones version) or Rickie Lee (total reinterpretation) 2nd.

The Stones' version is actually my third favorite after GNR's cover and Natalie Merchant's live version (I'm pleasantly surprised to see her version get a vote). GNR's is a bit protracted and also perhaps also a touch over-produced but I still really like their take on it. It was done for Interview with the Vampire in 1994 and, if I'm not mistaken, was the last GNR song to feature Slash and Duff McKagan (and before GNR became Axl Rose's solo band).

That was the last song with the classic lineup although there had already been some changes at that point anyway. I love G N' R but can't stomach their version. I only love the Stones version.

I will admit that the Guns n' Roses version worked quite well, over the closing scene of Interview With the Vampire.

I voted GnR only because it is a very good redo but the Stones of course is still definitive.

Opie Gone Bad - SFTD/Livin' For The City. A wonderful take by a Denver band, recently passed.

"Sympathy For The Devil" by GNR is one of those covers that sounds like it would be awesome on paper but turned out to be not especially memorable. I've got it lying around here somewhere but haven't heard it in ages and for the life of me can remember only that it pretty much aped the original and not much else. As mentioned, the most noteworthy thing about it was that it turned out the final Axl/Slash collaboration. The movie it was used in may well be the only modern vampire flick I've actually ever watched. I just remember it didn't make a lot of sense to me--it struck me as hilarious, possibly unintentionally so.

LAIBACH!
No, I'm kidding. The Stones.
But I knew a guy in high school who was really into Laibach.

I'm surprised; at this moment the Stones are only t 81%. And though I like several of the covers, the Stones original studio version of this is so perfect.
