From Radio.com:

By Kurt Wolff
Imagining a Doobie Brothers song like “Black Water” in a country context isn’t too much of a stretch. And now it’s becoming a reality.
A staple of the 1970s and ’80s soft-rock era, the Doobie Brothers are now temporarily shifting gears — and formats — to record a country album in Nashville. In addition, the upcoming recording project will also be chock full of A-list country stars as guests. Names revealed so far include Brad Paisley, Chris Young, Zac Brown Band, Toby Keith, Love and Theft, Sara Evans and Jerrod Niemann.

The Doobie Brothers lineup will include bandmembers Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee as well as Michael McDonald. The group’s former lead singer, McDonald left the band in 1982 but will rejoin the group for this project.

Much like Tuskegee, the best-selling, guest-star-packed 2012 Lionel Richie album that featured countrified versions of Richie’s biggest hits, the as-yet-untitled Doobie Brothers project will revisit some of the group’s best-known songs from their extensive catalog.

No track listing has yet been divulged, but during the 2014 Country Radio Seminar in Nashville last week, a select group of fans did get a taste of what’s to come. Bandmembers Johnston, Simmons and McFee appeared at a label showcase to perform several Doobie Brothers songs with country stars Paisley, Young and Evans. Songs performed that night included “Long Train Runnin,’” “China Grove,” “Black Water” and “Listen to the Music.”
“That was an interesting night,” Johnston told Billboard. “I met a lot of cool people and really enjoyed myself.”

Johnston went on to describe his experience working in Nashville so far. “Having been in the studio with both the studio guys and some of the artists, it’s amazing,” he said. “It’s been more fun that I ever could have imagined.”
This is not the Doobie Brothers first time flirting with Nashville. They performed a CMT Crossroads in 2011 with Luke Bryan, and even released a single to country radio, “World Gone Crazy,” in 2010.

Doobie Brothers Duets Album Track List Revealed

Click for full size

Like old black water that keeps on rolling, details have been leaking about Southbound, an upcoming album that pairs the Doobie Brothers with some of country music's biggest acts. We now finally know what songs Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band and the other country collaborators will be performing, as Rolling Stone Country has the exclusive reveal of the album's track list, along with its album art. (See below.)

Due November 4th, Southbound mixes the reverence of a tribute album with the back-and-forth collaboration of a duets record, as the Doobies share vocals and trade instrumental duties on 12 new recordings of their own hits. Along with the cover art — a portrait of an empty bar illuminated by a jukebox, presumably stocked with Doobie Brothers hits — the album's premise is straightforward. Each country artist takes the reins for one song, sharing vocal leads with either Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald or Patrick Simmons — the Doobie Brothers' three frontmen, performing on the same album for the first time since 1976's Takin' It to the Streets — while an all-star session band kicks up plenty of twang, dust and old-school guitar riffage in the background. Joining that backup band are Vince Gill and Hunter Hayes, who perform one song apiece as guitar slingers rather than vocalists.

"Country has changed since the days of Hank Williams," Johnston tells Rolling Stone Country. "It's taken on a rock tinge. Truthfully, the traditional style of rock & roll has kind of gone away. No one is representing it the way it used to be represented. Country music has sort of picked up the slack. That's why those artists are huge right now."

For decades, the Doobie Brothers' hits have been go-to cover songs for bands on both sides of the country/rock divide. Luke Bryan performed "Long Train Running" — with help from the Doobies themselves — during the pair's 2011 taping of CMT's Crossroads. Dolly Parton sang "China Grove" on her Dolly! variety show in 1976. Lady Antebellum tackled "Black Water" multiple times during the group's Own the Night Tour, often with help from their opening bands. Before he joined the Doobie Brothers in April 1975, Michael McDonald even covered his future band's material during bar shows.

"The first gig I ever played with these guys," McDonald says, "I realized, 'I just played this song two days ago at the Brass Rail in Pasadena!'"

Southbound isn't the only upcoming album that bridges the distance between veteran rockers and modern-day country stars. Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute to Motley Crüe hits stores in early August, with artists like the Cadillac Three, the Mavericks and Justin Moore putting their stamp on the hard-rockers' catalog.

The Doobie Brothers, Southbound Track List:

"Black Water" with Zac Brown Band

"China Grove" with Chris Young

"Jesus Is Just Alright" with Casey James

"Listen to the Music" with Blake Shelton and Hunter Hayes on guitar

"Long Train Runnin'" with Toby Keith

"Nobody" with Charlie Worsham

"Rockin' Down the Highway" with Brad Paisley

"South City Midnight Lady" with Jerrod Niemann

"Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)" with Tyler Farr

"Takin' It to the Streets" with Love and Theft

"What a Fool Believes" with Sara Evans

"You Belong to Me" with Amanda Sudano Ramirez of Johnnyswim, and Vince Gill on guitar

(TeamRock Radio) The Doobie Brothers have launched a video shot while they recorded a new version of 1973 track China Grove, featuring country music artist Chris Young.

It's taken from upcoming album Southbound, which sees the Doobies tying up with a string of country musicians for a dozen fresh takes on classic tracks from their catalogue.

It's also the first time vocalists Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons have appeared on the same album since 1976's Takin' It To The Streets.

Johnston recently told Rolling Stone: "Country has changed since the days of Hank Williams - it's taken on a rock tinge. The traditional style of rock'n'roll has kind of gone away; no one is representing it the way it used to be represented. Country music has sort of picked up the slack. That's why those artists are huge right now."

Young says: “I was always such a huge fan of China Grove. There’s just something about that chorus that just made you want to sing along with it.”

Southbound is release on November 4 via Sony Nashville and it’s available for pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon.

Tracklist
Black Water – with Zac Brown Band

China Grove – with Chris Young

Jesus Is Just Alright – with Casey James

Listen to the Music – with Blake Shelton, Hunter Hayes

Long Train Runnin' – with Toby Keith

Nobody – with Charlie Worsham

Rockin’ Down the Highway – with Brad Paisley

South City Midnight Lady – with Jerrod Niemann

Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While) – with Tyler Farr

Takin’ It to the Streets – with Love and Theft

What a Fool Believes – with Sara Evans

You Belong to Me – with Amanda Sudano Ramirez, Vince Gill

Giving this a spin here at work. The arrangements adhere so closely to the originals, it's almost like they just overdubbed the guest vocals. Not very interesting, I'm afraid.

kind of figured it would be like that.

older artist are always looking for ways to make money:

greatest hits

greatest hits live

live shows from years ago.

duets

just about anything goes anymore.

of course they could always sit down together and pound out some new tunes, but why do that, when you can do all of the above?

But why bother?

Nobody buys new music anymore and albums are costly. You spend all that time and money to get sales of 35,000.

Not worth it.

Neither is this, but it's a lot more safe.

What's frustrating is that the Doobies can still get it done. Their 2010 album, World Gone Crazy, was very enjoyable. I'd buy another original album along those lines, but this kind of thing (self covers/Country duet album) leaves me cold. Yet, Pete and Renny are right that new music probably isn't a priority for the band and not worth the effort. Sad.

I saw this in the store yesterday and I just don't have any interest in another band having artists covering their classic songs.

I did see a very recent picture of the band and must say, especially for Tom Johnston he looks great. Better than he did 30 years ago.

I just played this at work. At low volume, you can hardly tell any of the country performers are there so it's OK. The Doobie Brothers sound appears to dominate. :)

World Gone Crazy was pretty good. Too bad that they feel that they have to do this.
