So, I read an article about "spiritual sequels" and thought I would pose the question here, "what about the movies that, while not really sequels, just kind of belong together anyway?"

For me, I would say Pacific Rim is a spiritual sequel to Cloverfield.

Seabiscuit is the Spirtual (sp) Sequel to Tucker.

(Bridges is a car guy at the start of Seabiscuit before turning against cars.)

I thought this thread was going to be about movies that were so bad, it would be a Miracle if anybody made a sequel.

To me, Unforgiven was the spiritual sequel to Eastwood's "Man with No Name" westerns. Spiritual epilogue, more like it.

Yeah, I'd agree; but it's also a kind of antithesis.

I always thought of Pale Rider as a sequel to the "Man With No Name" movies.

I did, too. But then Unforgiven happened and I thought of it as also a sequel.

In one timeline, he kept being a lone gunman. In the other, he met a woman who tamed him, made him want to try clean living, and settled down.

The thing about Unforgiven is that it is such an intentional statement about what a natural born killer's life could look like later on.

Pale Rider is more of a revenge story, with supernatural overtones. It's also somewhat of a remake of Shane.

"Somewhat"? More like completely a remake. Not saying I didn't like it though.

Okay, I'll buy that. I wasn't completely sure, so I erred on the side of caution :)

Shane doesn't have the vengeance angle, though.

It doesn't entirely work, but Grosse Point Blank has been described as a sort of sequel to Say Anything, with War, Inc. being the same for Grosse Point Blank.

Zombieland is a spiritual sequel to Adventureland. Same lead, similar theme park. It's all the same. Only the names have changed.

For some strange, unexplainable reason, Universal never made a Dracula sequel that featured Bela Lugosi reprising the role, not until and unless you count Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein in 1948. This despite at least 6 Frankenstein movies.

So Columbia Pictures did a sort of Dracula rip-off in 1944 called Return of the Vampire, featuring Lugosi in a look-a-like vampire role named Armand Tesla. He was pretty much Dracula in the film. There was also a wolfman in it. Thanks.
