Metallica has good news for fans who are bummed they can't afford to travel to Europe to see them play with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax: Can't make it to Europe this June for one of the seven Sonisphere "Big Four" shows featuring the 'Tallica along with Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax? No problem . . . we've got the next best thing through the magic of satellite technology with a special HD simulcast from Sofia, Bulgaria on June 22!

Here's how it works: The live show will be transmitted via satellite to over 450 movie theaters in the U.S. and over 350 theaters across Europe, Canada, and Latin America. Within hours of all of us walking off the stage, depending on what time zone you live in, you'll be able to rock out to each set in the cozy confines of your local movie theater that same night.

Now the nitty gritty details: Tickets for the one night only event are available at the local theater box offices and online at thebigfourlive.com where you can see a complete list of presenting theaters. They will start to go on sale Friday, May 21 in the U.S and Friday, May 28 internationally.

I've seen a few of these simulcasts before, and the atmosphere is usually pretty good... if you're a fan of these bands, it seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Metallica have confirmed details of a concert event in Antarctica in December as part of a promotion for Coca-Cola Zero, two days after it was revealed on the soft drinks’ Columbian website (read about it here).

Coca-Cola Zero presents "Música Zero", an artistic event that will enable Metallica to perform their world-class music in Antarctica for the first time.

“After over 30 years as a band,” posted Metallica, “we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth . . . except for one. That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career as we'll be performing near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Sunday, December 8, 2013.”

“Latin American fans in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico will be able to enter a contest for the chance to win an Antarctic cruise that sails December 3-10 and will stop at Carlini,” added the band. “We'll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification . . . a real first for us! The show will also be streamed live for our friends in those Latin American countries who cannot join us at the base and filmed to share with everyone at a later date.”

In order to be part of the trip, fans will have to participate in a contest that is being launched in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico, starting on October 28th and until November 22nd. (hennemusic) Metallica performed in Antarctica on Sunday as part of a Coca-Cola Zero-sponsored promotional event, and the band are sharing photos from the concert.
"This was the most unique show Metallica has ever done," posted the group. "The band, contest winners, research station scientists (from Russia, South Korea, China, Poland, Chile, Brazil and Germany), and the ship crew, all crammed in this little dome out on the helipad of Carlini Station in Antarctica! The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words cannot describe how happy everyone was."

Metallica's dome performance was transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification. The Coca-Cola Zero contest was open to fans from several Latin and South American countries.

I saw them. While ago when they were doing their Summer Sanitarium tour amd promoting their (awful) St. Anger album.

Metallica’s Orion Music + More festivals are done, according to the band’s James Hetfield.

The guitarist shared his thoughts and frustrations with the current state of hard rock and heavy metal in the United States in a new interview with Don Jantzen of 94.5 The Buzz in Houston, Texas, and he says the band’s attempts to launch their own annual event has been a bust.

"Right now, it seems like metal is struggling a little bit in the States,” said Hetfield while promoting this week's release of the band’s 'Through The Never' film on DVD. “Obviously, the Orion [Music + More] festival that we had tried to do the last couple of years has really not been… Gosh, it's been a disaster financially, and it's not able to happen again because of that. So it's a bummer. So, you know, we're doing what we can to keep being alive here. And I hope to get out and play in the States. It seems like forever since we've been out and about. You know, we've hit the coasts and we've done TV stuff and things like that. But it will happen again. So hopefully, to get your fix, you're able to get the DVD and sit there and headbang with your friends."

Metallica launched Orion Music + More in Atlantic City in 2012. The weekend event moved to Belle Isle in Detroit last year, attracting an estimated 40,000 fans, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers headlining the first night and Metallica closing out the fest the second.

Last month, a spokeswoman for promoter C3 Presents confirmed that the festival will be taking 2014 off as Metallica is touring Europe in early June, during the time period the event was held the last two years.

As for Metallica, Hetfield explained the band’s recent touring plans – including the summer of 2014 – are based on available opportunities.

"You know what? We keep going back to Europe for summer festivals,” he explained. “People keep offering us headline spots over there. [We're going to] South America this year. I don't know what's happening the States. The States has gotta step up and want their music.”

"I'm not sure what's going on in the States as far as rock and metal goes and concert-wise,” Hetfield continued, “but there's not really any willingness to get a big show out there and make it worthwhile to actually get out there and play. You see other bands gathering up six different bands just to go out and play. It's pretty tough in North America."

I dunno, maybe people are just getting tired of Metallica hacking out garbage albums.

I haven't been that impressed with Metallica as a live band for a long time now.

I loved Death Magnetic and thought it was their best album since the Black Album, possibly since And Justice for All. Certainly better than their awful alternative experiment or the unlistenable St. Anger.

I'm with ya-that album was damn good and proof they've still got it.

Don't how that is hack garbage, but to each their own.

As far as touring the US, they are right. But they'd still pack arenas here if they wanted to, but it seems they're offended they can't fill a stadium maybe?

I don't think Metallica, or most of the other non-hair metal bands still active from the 70s and 80's, are the problem. They, Maiden, Priest, Kiss, Sabbath - all can still draw 15-20,000 on their own.

I think the issue's with the undercard. Metal suffered in the 90s, and the big bands you would expect to build a festival didn't really materialize. Korn's still out there, but Slipknot, Pantera, and a lot of the others are gone. Zombie's making movies. Add in that metal got more fractured - power metal in Europe, more extreme forms in the States - and it's difficult to put together a line up that people want to see all of, or that will pull in people from the middle of the genre, instead of the extremes.

As an example, I saw the Gigantour last year, with 6 bands on it and with Megadeth and Black Label Society; only drew about 7000, because both bands had been through in the previous 18 months, and the undercard (Volbeat, Newsted, Hellyeah, and 1 other) just aren't enough by themselves yet.

I'm more concerned about what happens to my concert dollars as more and more of those headliners stop touring. Aside from Lamb of God, Linkin Park, and maybe Avenged Sevenfold, I don't really see anyone getting ready to step up to those 15,000 seaters. Which will be a real shame, because with metal, the bigger the crowd, the better.

Anyway, I'm mostly indifferent about Death Magnetic and have successfully forgotten St. Anger. The first four albums are still the only stuff I really for from this band.

I think you have to take a lot of this stuff with a grain of salt. You don't know what the context is or where he was when he answered the question. Or what kind of mood he was in.

The hard thing about being in the public eye is that you can never mouth off or just say stupid stuff that doesn't really mean anything.

That doesn't mean a thing to me and these guys tour every year all over the world, they did the Big 4, the movie, played in Antarctica for God's sake and did that great Grammy performance (I only saw it online refusing to watch the Grammys of course).

I mean, what left do they have to prove?

Hammett's quote seems humorous about how long it's taken to get going-not that they have no interest in recording again.

That's the point. They don't have anything left to prove and I think it shows in how little passion or interest I hear in their music.

I go all the way back with Metallica - I was a high school kid in San Francisco when they were breaking out. The hunger and energy were what made them stand out, because other than Cliff Burton, none of them were virtuosos. For gods sake, Hammet copied most of the solos from Kill Em All and the original Garage Days practically note for note from the originals. We didn't care, because it was about the performance and how exciting it all was.

Now I find them dull. I still get the excitement from the first 4 or 5 records, but past that it got very sterile and, to my ears, calculated. If I want to hear that I can pick up just about any pop record.
