Apparently, the Duke was a big Noel Coward fan;liked to recite lines from his plays.
Now let's imagine Duke Wayne starring in,for instance,Blithe Spirit...

I like most of his movies - Big Jake is a fun one that's missing from your list. I like the story - a good, typical D&D type scenario.

But I picked The Quiet Man on that list since, for whatever reason, my family watched that one repeatedly, every time we saw it airing - much like we did Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

The Longest Day. Great fun to watch the Duke wrestle with the pronunciation of Sainte-Mère-Église. :D

Whereas I have enjoyed many John Wayne movies, The Quiet Man is the only one I have watched into double digits.
Most of them, I have watched just once or twice.

I've watched Rio Lobo... mmmmm.... twenty times?

War Wagon probably fifteen times. I had the War Wagon comic book too.

The Searchers by far. Then Rio Bravo and the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

I also enjoy
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Fort Apache
and
Tall In The Saddle

Miss Martin: "I saw you hit that poor man!"
Rocklin: "Yes, ma'am, just as hard as I could."

The correct answer is "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," pilgrim.

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart? It doesn't get much better than that.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a big favorite, but I went with Rio Bravo.

Why?

John Wayne
Angie Dickinson
Dean Martin
Ricky Nelson
Ward Bond
John Russell
Claude Akins
and Walter Brennan as Stumpy!

Directed by Howard Hawks ... Leigh Brackett worked on the screenplay ... and Dimitri Tiomkin wrote the score!

(Plus, it was kinda the Duke's response to High Noon.)

Donovan's Reef

Damned if I know why.
It's just one of those movies that
if I come upon while channel surfing
I am compelled to keep it on
and enjoy it.

Donovan's Reef was my Dad's favorite movie. Not coincidentally, he served in the Marines in the South Pacific during WWII.

The best is probably The Searchers. My favorite is True Grit.

I just watched an almost 3-minute clip of Donovan's Reef on youtube, and apart from some colorful scenery (and possibly good looking native women doing some dance routines) the story itself seemed of dubious worth. But I don't think I've seen this film.

It is more corny than Kansas in August.
(Maybe that's the attraction?)

Could be. "Serious" is NOT what I'd call what little I saw in that clip.

It's certainly not The Green Berets. And hey, there's another film of his that I like but didn't make this list.
