The first decade of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow is to be marked with a limited-edition 19-disc box set early next year.
It contains reproductions of the original vinyl singles’ artwork and comes complete with a 32-page book detailing the band’s release history from 1975 until 1986. Sleeve notes are written by Andy Francis.
Label Commercial Marketing say: “As one of the cornerstones of British Rock, Rainbow, led by the never-predictable but ever-astonishing guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, became synonymous with some of the most well regarded and popular charting Rock songs of the seventies and eighties.
Passing through the band were some of the best the genre had to offer – vocalists Ronnie James Dio and Graham Bonnet, bass player and producer Roger Glover and drummer Cozy Powell. Each brought their individual talents to record some of rock’s best-loved timeless singles.”
Rainbow: The Singles Box Set 1975-1986 is released on February 3.

Nice looking set but there just isn't enough stuff there to justify a purchase. It looks like the only tracks I don't have on CD are 7 edits and the two live cuts from Cardiff (live versions of Power and Spotlight Kid appeared on Finyl Vinyl, and I suspect the CD19 version of Man On A Silver Mountain is probably the same as the Finyl Vinyl version). I likely would have popped had they included a DVD of their videos.
IP, I have the Dio Single Box Set which is also a Universal release. Outside box is sturdy and this Rainbow one seems to be constructed the same way. The sleeves for each of the discs are oversized relative to the size of the CD (5 & 5/16ths x 5 & 5/16ths). They are not thick, sturdy cardboard but are not too flimsy either, but definitely a step down from most mini-lp sleeves. There is a white paper innersleeve for each disc. There is a 32 page book that lists the content of each of the discs with some comments from writer Malcolm Dome. The printing of the box/sleeves/book are all top-notch. Andy Pearce did the mastering. Since it appears this Rainbow set is being handled by Universal, and Andy Pearce has done Rainbow remasters, I would expect the Rainbow set to be of similar quality. The one big difference between the two is that the Dio set had the extra 11 track DVD, which is something that is sorely missed with this Rainbow set.

That Dio box is already out of print and going for collectible prices:
It was released only last year, which is probably a clue as to how long this new Rainbow one will remain in print. Maybe one pressing and nothing more.

I'd only get this for collecting sake as I have virtually everything but a single edit.
A DVD will be included with the upcoming box set but I believe it is the Donnington show-not sure how long or if music videos will appear.
As for those live tracks from Cardiff, they are on the 2 CD 2009 best of "Anthology 1975-1983" which I have and is a really good comp.

I'm a Rainbow fan, and a fan of nice packaging—and I've purchased two rather pricey CD singles box sets in the past, both of which had at least a dozen otherwise unavailable on CD tracks included. Anyone who bought this and loves it, glad for that & I never criticize anyone else for making a purchase that works for them.
As for me, however...seriously, $115 Amazon US or even $88 US equivalent on Amazon UK, for a box of CD singles with NO unreleased tracks, at least half a dozen tracks repeated and the equivalent of less than 3 CDs of material spread across 19 discs?
This makes the much-criticized moneybags $150 Small Faces box set look like a bargain! Whatever happened, I wonder, to that supposed multi-disc Rainbow box set with unreleased material announced a few years back?

I'm not a fan of these expensive boxes myself, however if you are an investor and have a few 1000 buy a few of these and keep them sealed and put them on ebay in a few years time, i'm sure you could double your money.
I made a good profit on the family box set. Brought 3 of them, doubled my money in a year. I use te profits to buy some more CDs etc for myself.

As I mentioned on the post about that box set it IS coming out this fall.
The purpose of this box is NOT to have rare or unreleased material-this is a replication of all the singles and that's it. Why would anyone expect anything more?
It's aimed solely at collectors.
The career-spanning box set of 4 CDs and 1 DVD is on the way.
