I was excited to hear 10538 Overture used in the American Hustle trailers. I was ecstatic to find out that Jeff Lynne had a new song in the movie (and on the soundtrack) along with Long Black Road.

Jeep's Blues - Duke Ellington
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
White Rabbit - Mayssa Karaa
10538 Overture - Electric Light Orchestra
Live And Let Die - Wings
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - The Bee Gees
I Feel Love - Donna Summer
Don't Leave Me This Way - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
Delilah - Tom Jones
I've Got Your Number - Jack Jones
Long Black Road - Electric Light Orchestra
A Horse With No Name - America
Stream of Stars - Jeff Lynne
Live To Live - Chris Stills

Live and Let Die, wasn't that from some other movie?

Anyone know if other movie title songs have been used later on in other movies?

Tarantino has done this. For instance, he used "Across 110th Street" in Jackie Brown and "Cat People" in Inglorious Basterds. I also remember the theme from Chariots of Fire being used jokingly in various comedies. I'm sure there are other examples.

I think that it's pretty common with movie tunes. Especially in a period piece like American Hustle. A popular film song has the double nostalgia whammy of putting you back in time with the music and the movie.

For example, Theme from A Summer Place:

Quote:
"Theme from A Summer Place" has become a ubiquitous representation of "peaceful music" and has been employed frequently in popular culture.
"Claudelle Inglish" (1961) employed "Theme from A Summer Place" as well as actors Arthur Kennedy and Constance Ford.
The Percy Faith version is used in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), although it does not appear on the soundtrack album.
The original version of the song is used in Batman (1989) when The Joker attempts to seduce Vicki Vale in the museum.
In the 1993 episode "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" of The Simpsons, elderly Springfield citizen Jasper made an ironic cover by singing the title.
The 1995 Freakazoid! episode "Relax-O-Vision" features the titular gag in which potentially frightening action sequences are replaced by peaceful stock footage accompanied by "Theme from A Summer Place."
In the 1997 movie Con Air, when the body of Pinball falls out of the sky and onto a couple's Volvo.
In the 2002 episode "Him" of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 7, Episode 6).
The 2007 film Surf's Up uses "Theme from A Summer Place" in a brief cutaway scene depicting the domestic situation of two penguin boys and their mother.
In the 2009 film An Education, set in 1962, "Theme from A Summer Place" is played during Jenny's (Carey Mulligan's) 17th birthday party.
In the 2012 episode "Near Death" of CSI: NY
In the episode The Bubble of 30 Rock (3rd season).
The song's peaceful and relaxed theme has taken on a darker significance in more recent years as it has been used to convey an eerie sense of false security in the horror miniseries Rose Red (2002), and the movies Final Destination 3 (2006) Dark Shadows (2012) and Beautiful Creatures (2013).

Wait, is that "Long Black Road", the Japan-only song from ELO s "Zoom'? If so, that's at least a start to collecting the annoyinglynn-ly releases as of late.

I'm wondering if that's why "Long Black Road" was left off the most recent ZOOM remaster.

'American Hustle' director David O. Russell's musical musings

Video at the link
Image

Quote:
For writer-director David O. Russell, getting the music just right is a huge part of making movies. One testament to his dedication is that he has repeatedly requested to license songs from the notoriously picky rock band Led Zeppelin — and succeeded.

"Good Times, Bad Times," the first track from Zeppelin's self-titled debut album, had never been licensed for a movie before Russell used it in "The Fighter" — "much to my glee," he recalled during a recent installment of the Envelope Screening Series, at which he discussed the importance of music in his films, including his latest, "American Hustle."

Russell was joined by "American Hustle" editor Jay Cassidy, who also worked on Russell's previous film, "Silver Linings Playbook." That film featured another Zeppelin song, "What Is and What Should Never Be." Cassidy recalled, "Once that song was put on the table, we recut the scene to fit the song."

The trend of using Zeppelin songs almost continued with "American Hustle," Russell's 1970s-set con story loosely based on the FBI's Abscam sting. They were all set — "until 'Long Black Road,' which was offered to us by Jeff Lynne [of Electric Light Orchestra], and that just was meant to be.… It felt like that was the right thing." (Although "Good Times, Bad Times" does reappear in the first "Hustle" trailer, glimpsed in the clip above.)

"Fortunately," Russell continued, "we have [Susan] Jacobs, our music supervisor, who's wonderful, and Philip Tallman, who's our [music] editor, and she knows the way to do all these things, including getting 'White Rabbit' [the Jefferson Airplane song] in Arabic, which was a great idea. Including getting Jeff Lynne, the founder of ELO, to open up unreleased tracks to us, which was just unbelievable — and a whole different sound. I associate ELO with more of the music that we've seen in other pictures, a kind of West Coast sound, and this is a completely different sound."
He added, "It's a wonderful thing to hear a song that feels like a classic you know, but you have never heard it."

For more from Russell and editor Jay Cassidy on "American Hustle," watch the full video above.

Isn't that the trailer that uses Led Zep? I see they are not on the soundtrack. :(

Yes, "Good Times Bad Times." I was surprised to hear it in the trailer.
Looks like a great movie and soundtrack though.

In a bit of a surprise, the New York Film Critics Circle named American Hustle best picture of 2013.

Opens in limited release tomorrow. Figure I'll see it this weekend, along with part 2 of The Hobbit.

The Golden Globes also love American Hustle (which doesn't come out till Friday) but is not so in love with The Butler which seemed to be a favorite just yesterday (if you watch ABC/ Disney channels).

So far it's a battle between Slaves and Hustlers.

I was thinking that Lynne had missed out on some cash because of the film using the original recording of 10538 Overture (by ELO) instead of his solo recording that he released on last year's Mr. Blue Sky album. Then I saw the movie and realized that they used both versions. So Lynne really has four songs in the film.

I know. One of the best matches of music and scene in the movie.

Since when is L&LD by Wings? I've always seen it credited to Paul & Linda.

Joel Whitburn's books attribute the single to "Paul McCartney and Wings."

Maybe you were thinking of "Ram"? I know that was co-credited because of a freeze on Paul's earnings at the time due to litigation, if I recall.

Thank you American Hustle for bringing 10538 Overture to the public consciousness.
