James Mangold, Hugh Jackman Sinking Claws Into Another ‘The Wolverine’ Film

Twentieth Century Fox has begun negotiations with James Mangold to return for another installment of The Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman bringing back his signature character with the razor sharp adamantium hooks. This comes after The Wolverine played very strongly overseas, enough to now sit as the second highest grossing X-Men film of all time. The film has grossed $413 million worldwide, with $132 million domestic and $280 million in international revenue.

Here’s where it is right now. Mangold is making a deal to write the treatment, with X-Men franchise matriarch Lauren Shuler Donner producing. The storyline is being kept under tight wraps. I think Mangold did a bang up job on his first superhero film. When I met him at Comic-Con San Diego, he said he tried to veer from the usual superhero formula–if hero doesn’t succeed, world is doomed–and instead make it a character-driven storyline. There were plenty of action pieces, samurai swordplay and reasons for Logan to work up that famous temper, but at its core the film worked because the stakes were subtler and the storytelling somehow more intimate. Mangold is repped by WME and Management 360, Jackman by WME.

I love hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Counting the cameo in First Class, would this make 8?

James Mangold Confirms THE WOLVERINE Sequel Will Be Based On An Existing Comic

The Wolverine was the first actual X-Men movie from 20th Century Fox to at least "somewhat" follow a particular comic book storyline (see Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's Wolverine run). X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the second. Will The Wolverine sequel be the third? Where The Wolverine left off and where the actual comic book ends are at two very distinct points; so where exactly could Mangold turn in a sequel? Unsurprisingly, he doesn't name a specific story or creator run but he does say he has a particular comic book story in mind. "Absolutely. I can tell you that I certainly have in determining where we are going that I’m not solely relying on my own imagination but also the imaginations that have spun great stories about Wolverine in the comics," said Mangold when asked if there were specific Wolverine stories from Marvel comics that he would be drawing inspiration from. Mangold also acknowledged that the two year gap that Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Yukio (Rila Fukushima spent traveling around the world gives him room to craft another standalone story inbetween the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past. "I honestly have sketches and ideas, but there are many alternatives and that certainly is indeed a window that exists," commented Mangold on shoehorning in the sequel.

'The Wolverine' and 'Fantastic Four' sequel dates revealed

The release dates for sequels to The Wolverine and The Fantastic Four have been revealed.

X-Men spin-off The Wolverine, a standalone adventure for Hugh Jackman's character Logan, was released in last summer. According to Collider, Fox have now confirmed that a follow-up film will hit cinemas on March 3, 2017.

Meanwhile, while the planned reboot of The Fantastic Four is yet to open in cinemas, Fox have already locked down a release date for a sequel, which will debut in July, 2017. There will also be intrigue about an as-yet-unknown new Marvel project, which will follow on July 13, 2018.

Fox Sets David James Kelly To Script Next ‘Wolverine’

Fox has hired David James Kelly to script the next installment of The Wolverine, the X-Men franchise spinoff that James Mangold will direct with Hugh Jackman reprising his signature role. The studio is eyeing a March 3, 2017, release. Kelly also is next set to adapt the Dark Horse graphic novel Mind Mgmt for Scott Free Productions and the original pitch Sentinel for Appian Way and Fox. Kelly is repped by WME, LBI and Hansen, Jacobson.

Patrick Stewart says he might star opposite Hugh Jackman in next 'Wolverine' movie

Patrick Stewart has revealed that he could star opposite Hugh Jackman in the next Wolverine movie.

Last month (January) Stewart said that he and Ian McKellen would not have roles in the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set for release on May 27, 2016. However, Stewart has now revealed that he was partly mistaken.

"I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal," he told The Oregonian. "But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it."

However, Stewart went on to tease that he could play a part in a forthcoming X-Men spin-off film. "And what I'm very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together," he said. "Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I've already done."
