Steven’s new stereo and surround mixes of Jethro Tull’s classic third album Benefit will be released on 28th October in a 3 disc CD/DVD and single vinyl edition. Also included are new mixes of all single A and B sides from the period, with the exception of The Witch’s Promise for which the multitrack tapes are missing (the original mix is included in both mono and stereo however). No mastering has been done to the remixes, and a flat transfer of the original stereo mix is also included.

Following the release last year of the 40th anniversary edition of Thick as a Brick, on 28th October Chrysalis Records will release a Collector’s Edition of Jethro Tull’s Benefit album. Benefit was Jethro Tull’s third album, first released in April 1970. Transcending the blues influences of their 1969 album Stand Up, it was a much more hard-rocking album which saw the band utilise more advanced studio techniques. It reached number 3 in the UK. The Collector’s Edition of Benefit plus bonus tracks has been mixed by Steven Wilson and approved by Ian Anderson. CD2 is a mono and stereo disc of rare and previously unreleased versions of tracks and singles associated with the period Benefit was released in (more information available on request). The audio only DVD includes a surround sound mix of Benefit, 96/24 tracks of Stereo in UK and US running orders. In addition, the Collector’s Edition will include a booklet featuring an 8,000 word essay written by Martin Webb, as well as interviews with band members and a selection of photos, some of which are rare and previously unseen.

Not yet, but there's still time....
This is a must for me - can't wait!
I propose we lobby for a new Grammy category for Best Remix/Remaster (Engineer or Producer) and just go ahead and give it to Wilson as a lifetime achievement award.....just do it now and get it out of the way..! Then sit back and enjoy....he seems to be unbeatable...

I seem to see him on a tour twice a year with different bands yet is able to keep releasing music as well as mastering other people's stuff. Just incredible.

I'm really looking forward to this. Benefit is one of my favorite Jethro Tull albums but the sound has always left something to be desired. Hopefully this will correct that. In fact, I have complete faith that it's going to sound amazing.
I do wish there were one or two "barrel scraping" tracks that I had never heard before, but I can live without them.

Whoever the mastering engineer(s) is/are working with Wilson are doing an equally good job in most cases; I'm wondering if Wilson is given final approval on the mastering.

Guys, Steven Wilson does not (re)master anything!! He (re)mixes!! 2 completely different things!!!
(Sorry to rant there, but it's become a new pet peeve of mine)
I always say that but not too many pay attention. Peter Mew's work on the remasters gets ignored.
I'm not sure if they are using his work for all of these Deluxes or not. Hell, he didn't even get credit on most of the Tull remasters-they didn't even list anyone on most of them!

Interesting that Peter Mew's name should come up.
I get news from Abbey Road studios and the last post announced that Peter Mew has retired as of September 1 after working there for an incredible 48 years!. I have really enjoyed his work on the Beatles and all the various Mersey Beat groups he cleaned up over the years...
And as for Steven Wilson - since he has created new mixes for all these titles lately, those would then be mastered creating new masters, right?
Haven't really noticed but did get he get mastering credit as well or just the remixing? I'm thinking the latter, but with him anything is apparently within his grasp.

Got mine today and have the DTS 96kHz 5.1 mix on right now. Nice and powerful, the surround is immersive with nice seperation to the side speakers. Very wide sound that fills my room. Thumbs up from me.
Rarely ever play this album so it's interesting to sit down and actually go through the songs.
It was released in 1970 and precedes Aqualung (which is chock full of hits). This one doesn't really have a hit song but it flows nicely and has that tone that Tull became famous for.

Who, me?
Got mine today, and I'm already liking it a lot. The high res audio sounds great. This is just a really fine album, with no filler on either the US or British version.
