U.S. Progressive Metal pioneers FATES WARNING have finally returned with their first studio album release in about a decade! Entitled “Darkness In A Different Light”, the album will be released on September 30th, 2013 in Europe and October 1st, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

“Darkness In A Different Light” is FATES WARNING’s first album of new material since the release of “FWX” in 2004 and also marks the first release for the band’s stellar current line-up of Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti (guitars), Joey Vera (bass) and Bobby Jarzombek (drums).

The album was produced by Matheos and mixed by long time FATES WARNING engineer Phil Magnotti, while mastering was handled by Maor Appelbaum at Maor Appelbaum Mastering, California.
The (above pictured) artwork for the album was designed by Conte di San Pietro.

FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder checked in with a comment as follows:

"Darkness in a Different Light" is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band.
I believe that this line-up is the best that Fates has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album. It's been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished here.
We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years. We plan on touring as much as possible for "Darkness in a Different Light" and hopefully we'll hit a few places we've never been...

Indeed, FATES WARNING already have headlining touring runs confirmed for October in Europe and November/December in North America, with further live activity to follow in 2014.
See http://fateswarning.com/ for the complete list of tour dates.

Nice to have these guys back. They had a great run of albums through their most recent one. Can't believe it's 9 years since then. I'll definitely be picking this up.

Can't wait to hear what Mr. Matheos came up with after the Arch/Matheos album + the last OSI album. Both of those albums were absolutely fantastic.

I'm loving that Frank Aresti is back in the studio with them. Matheos is great, but having both of them makes for much more interesting rhythms and different textures in the solos.

The InsideOut preorder link has a 2 disc option that has a couple extra songs on it. I've already got my ticket to see them in Seattle in December.

Most recently, FATES WARNING have announced that guitarist Mike Abdow will be filling in for Frank Aresti on the next scheduled tour runs, as other work commitments will keep him from the upcoming tours.
Here are some comments in regards to this matter:

Frank Aresti: “Being part of FATES WARNING continues to be a great honor for me, and I'm very proud of "Darkness In A Different Light". Even though work commitments will keep me from the upcoming tours, I'm hopeful to rejoin them for live shows in the not-too-distant future. Having said that, I know Mike Abdow, he's a great player, and I'm looking forward to seeing him with the band.”

Mike Abdow: “It is an incredible honor for me to have the chance to play with FATES WARNING. Filling in for Frank Aresti is an immense and exciting challenge that I do not take lightly. I am really looking forward to the upcoming tour with the band!“

Jim Matheos: “With the exception of a few years in the late 90s when he was AWOL, Frank has been an integral part of FW's live sound for 25 years, so his presence is going to be missed on the upcoming tours. At the same time, we look forward to working with Mike and we're all excited to finally be playing some new material.”

FATES WARNING have headlining touring runs confirmed for October in Europe and November/December in North America, with further live activity to follow in 2014. The upcoming European tour has now confirmed to feature support coming from Norway’s Divided Multitude (October 6th – 17th) as well as American group The Omega Experiment for select shows. Been listening to this for the last few days (pre-ordered and got it on Thursday) so I thought I'd give some thoughts if anyone's on the fence.

Immediate thoughts on the first listen - it's more aggressive than FWX. Don't get me wrong, I love that album, but it's very mellow.

"One Thousand Fires" is a great opener and you immediately hear the great textures on rhythm with Frank Aresti being back in the studio. Jim Matheos is excellent, but with Frank back in the fold, there's some great interplay between the two. He also adds some excellent solos.

Both Ray Alder and Kevin contribute some lyrics, so there's some variation there as well. Moore's "O Chloroform" is pretty interesting. The two bonus cuts are basically variations of two tracks on the main album, with the extended version of "Firefly" adding a coda that brings things down a notch. "Falling Further" is an amplified take on the short, acoustic track "Falling."

Overall, I like this a lot - I've been listening to it pretty much non-stop since Thursday. I'm looking forward to seeing them in December.

Woah, does Kevin Moore play on this or did he just contribute in the song-writing department?

There's no credit for keyboards on the disc, and there's minimal (if any) keyboards to be heard. As I mentioned, it's much more aggressive sounding.

I think Moore's concentrating on OSI and Chromakey stuff.

I pretty much echo what ted has already said, this is an excellent album. Guaranteed lock to be in my top 10 of 2013 and fairly likely to be in the top 5. It's definitely a metal album but there is a prog flavor throughout and also some more commercial, catchy material mixed in. The performances are top notch. Special mention to drummer Bobby Jarzombek, who really shines on this. I also think the mix and master is very pleasent for a 2013 metal record (DR9, but to my ears a bit better than that).

Only real complaint is that they didn't put Falling Further onto the main disc. I suppose they felt it conflicted with Falling and was too poppy for the rest of the album, but I think it's catchy as hell and would have fit in nicely towards the back end of the record. I'm not sure if a one-disc version has even hit the market yet (when I ordered it, Amazon was only selling the 2-disc version), but for people thinking about getting this, Falling Further makes getting the 2-disc version essential.
