It's been at least a couple of years since a new Paul Simon best-of released. According to Musictap, we don't have much longer to wait for a new one. I can finally get some sleep at night! At least for a while, until the next is announced.

Musictap.com

Legacy Recordings have a new Paul Simon set on the calendar that will likely be most desired by fans who like the hits rather than complete album collections, or artist-chosen tunes. The new set is called Over The Bridge Of Time: A Paul Simon Retrospective (1964-2011).

Within this single disc set will be 20 songs from not only the Simon & Garfunkel catalog, but also from Simon’s rich solo career.

The album collection is chronologically sequenced beginning with the great Simon & Garfunkel hit, “The Sound Of Silence” from their first AND second album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (1964), and Sounds Of Silence (1966) and ending with “Love And Hard Times” from his twelfth and most recent album in his catalog, So Beautiful Or So What (2011).

This comprehensive run through Paul Simon’s treasure trove of songs is a collected gem that will appeal to all fans of his work. Just scope out the track-list and then mark your calendars.

Over The Bridge Of Time: A Paul Simon Retrospective will be available from Legacy on October 15.

Yeah right, I'll mark my calendar to sleep late that day. Who do they think needs 100 different permutations of the same couple of dozen songs?

Well I have to admit I love the cover; it would have to be among my top ten of all time. Nonetheless, there's no way I'm going to repurchase the music just for that. I think I'll try and find the original photograph instead.

BTW, I do find it odd that while the cover shows the 59th Street Bridge, that song is not on the album!

I don't think that's the 59th Street Bridge. There aren't any pedestrian walkways above the roadway.

You could be right, but this is clearly an older photo, and the bridge has been reconfigured a number of times since opening in 1909. According to Wikipedia [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensboro_Bridge ], "Originally the top level contained two pedestrian walks and two elevated railway tracks (which connected a spur of the IRT Second Avenue Elevated Line to the Queensboro Plaza elevated station) and the lower deck four motor traffic lanes, and what is now the "outer roadway" and pedestrian walk were two trolley lanes.'

Here's a 1912 view - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wavz13/8167137396/ - which pre-dates the 2nd Avenue El extension (opened in 1917). At that time the upper level has nothing but the walkways shown in the album cover. And boy, has Long Island City ever changed since then!

The Doors vs. Paul Simon.

Who will reign as the all-time compilation champion?

Don't forget The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan (maybe).

I'm just thankful that they didn't toss in a rarity or something like that which might have tempted me. As this appears now, no temptation whatsoever!

I was thinking the same thing when I read the article, just praying that there wasn't some rarity.

I wonder if there are even any rarities remaining? They've pulled that trick so many times already that the well might actually be dry. It's hard to believe they wouldn't have done something like that if they had any capability of doing so. :p

"stranded in a limousine" has appeared only once as far as i know on 'greatest hits etc." they could have thrown that one in.

"Stranded in a Limousine" was added as a bonus track to the One-Trick Pony soundtrack CD reissue.

But it says it will appeal to all fans of his work.

So, we have to buy it.
