Raven reissues the second, groundbreaking album from the wildest, rockin’est American band in country music during the 1970s – COMMANDER CODY AND HIS LOST PLANET AIRMEN. Long out of print, Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Truckers Favorites (1973) was the follow-up to debut album Lost in the Ozone and consolidated the band’s revved-up musical brew of western swing, boogie-woogie, country and rockabilly as the most entertaining sound of the day. Pianist / singer George Frayne (aka Commander Cody) and guitarist John Tichy formed the band in Michigan during 1967. A year later they moved to San Francisco where their hard-drinkin’, deep-tokin’ image combined with their rip-roarin’ sound earned them a reputation as the quintessential “bar band”. Signing to Paramount Records the band hit the US Top 10 in 1972 with the timeless ‘Hot Rod Lincoln’.

Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Truckers Favorites was a concept album of sorts, dedicated to the trucks and truckers who commandeered the highways and byways of the land. Alongside such classic country songs as Jerry Chestnut’s ‘Looking at the World through a Windshield’, Terry Fell’s ‘Truck Drivin’ Man’ and Doug Kershaw’s ‘Diggy Liggy Lo’ are band originals written in the same style: ‘Truck Stop Rock’, ‘Semi-Truck’ and ‘Mama Hated Diesels’. They also showed their love of 1950s R&B, with high-powered versions of Little Richard’s ‘Tutti Frutti’ and Ray Charles’ ‘It Should’ve Been Me’. With superb audio quality, color booklet and liner notes this entertaining CD is a must for fans of classic country rock and western swing.
