Let's start the thread with this article under the assumption that there will eventually be a fourth Iron Man movie of some kind:

Mark Wahlberg says he wants to play Iron Man after Robert Downey Jr
Mark Wahlberg has revealed he wants to be the next star of Iron Man.
Wahlberg has recently taken over the Transformers franchise from Shia LaBeouf and during an interview with Yahoo! Movies the Ted star was asked if he has his eye on any comic book or superhero roles.
"I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise from Robert Downey," he replied, before admitting that he is rarely considered for this type of part. "You know, it's one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I've never been asked," he explained.
However, Wahlberg went on to reveal he was "kind of being talked about for the Robin role" in 1997's Batman & Robin, a part which eventually went to Chris O'Donnell. "Somebody dodged a bullet!" Wahlberg said of avoiding the infamous flop starring George Clooney.
Since its release at the end of April, Iron Man 3 has become the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, raking in over $1.2 billion (£780 million) at cinemas worldwide. Downey Jr has since signed a deal to return as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. However, at present there are no confirmed plans for another standalone Iron Man movie.
I saw 2 Guns this afternoon. Wahlberg was very funny and likeable in the movie and handled the rat-a-tat dialogue pretty well. I'd say that if he can ditch the accent (which, admittedly, is a mighty bi "if"), he would not be the worst choice to play Tony Stark.

Robert Downey forever, but I thought Jim Sturgess looked the part. He's in Cloud Atlas (played the sick dude in the first segment, along with another couple of parts).
RDJR has so firmly established the wit and charm of the character that I wonder if they'll ever find anybody who doesn't seem like either a stuffed shirt or a buffoon in comparison. (Can't be too unfunny or too much of a clown).

I agree, but I can only think of three options for them:
1. Kill him off in Avengers 3 and never make another Iron Man movie.
2. Go with an unknown actor.
3. Go with a known box-office draw who, at the very least, will get people to show up just to see what he does.
They're in the same sort of situation the Bond people were in when Connery left. Doesn't really matter who they get, there's gonna be a backlash just because he isn't Downey.
He's too old, but that dude who played the Comedian in Watchmen, Jeff Dean Morgan, looks pretty good for the part.
He would work well, yeah. I thought he was Downey in an early Watchmen trailer.
Marky Mark as Tony? Firstly, he's almost as old as Downey, as they mention; why recast like that? Second, while I've enjoyed some of his movies, he's Marky Mark. He plays one type of guy, and it's not Tony Stark.
Tony Stark, as RDJ played him, is a pretty tough role to work -- he's got to be a cocky asshole that's sharp-witted, genuinely funny, but still warm and relatable. I think the reason Ryan Reynolds can't get his big-budget career to be successful is that while he's witty and funny, people don't find him nearly as likeable.

If Marvel plays their cards right---and they usually do, they won't reboot Iron man until after their regular Marvel universe has run its course. RDJ is already going to be playing Iron man in Avengers 2 and 3 so he'll still be Iron man in 2018 at the very latest. And by that time, there'll be more Avengers in and out of the team with solo movies taking the place of Iron man. Ant man, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, who knows who else? Maybe some day in the 2020's they'll start again but the Avengers movie franchise as we know it, can just keep going on and on and on with new members. I bet it'll be Marvel's version of the James Bond or Doctor Who franchises. Self renewing and regenerating with new team members as the years go by.
Now there is a chance that Rhodey might take over the armor for Iron man 4 and maybe even take his place in the Avengers as well. Besides, he wouldn't have to be War Machine again and he did sub for Tony for quite a while back in the 1980's. So there's the other option.
