Damn that's terrible. I know that I've never been a big fan of YACA releases, but at this point Jimmy would probably be better off Buffett-izing classic rock songs.

Yes...I know...and I was suggesting that this is about all he's capable of at this point. (Though obviously if you're a fan of the artists he's covering, you may not be impressed.)

I actually don't begrudge him the approach he has taken. At least people have fun at his shows, and he is certainly making a ton of money. And when I'm in the mood to listen to some Buffett, I can always listen to one of his albums from the 70s.

I consider myself to be a big fan, but for what I feel is the good music that he is capable of - he can be a decent storytelling songwriter and make some good sounding music beyond the clichés. Unfortunately, while he was never a great vocalist, he sounded good in the past and his voice just doesn't sound as good and the ratio of cheesy songs to better ones has gone in the wrong direction. I thought his 3 mid 90s albums were pretty damn good with Barometer Soup and Banana Wind both strong in particular (both have some annoying moments though) and even a 10 years ago, Far Side of the World was pretty good, but the stupid Five o'clock song re-Margaretvilled him in a cheesy country way. Ugh.

JoeP, glad to see you write that about Banana Wind, Barometer Soup and Far Side. All three are really phenomenal albums and three of my favorites. I thought License To Chill was probably his high point of the last 25 or so years, though (and I'm not a country fan).
The new one was quite a shock. The first single is horrific, but the rest of the album has a real 70's-Buffett vibe about it. It has a stupid amount of cheese to it. I wish he'd leave the goofy social commentary songs to John Prine, and it sadly seems like almost every other song on this album is like that. I'm not sure who he's writing it for. They don't come off as clever, and even his fanbase hates them, but at least they're saved by a more minimal production. There are few synthesizers on this album, which is a real breath of fresh air.
If you're a fan of classic Buffett, and can see through the cheese, this album may be for you.

I love all of his albums up to Last Mango in Paris. Also enjoyed his 90s albums, particularly Fruitcakes (wish he'd stuck with his original title: Quietly Making Noise). I'm not so big on his recent albums, and I'm content to listen to my collection of 70s-era boots at this point.

It's probably the only place that a fair amount of his audience hears such views and it's nice that's one area he doesn't drop in favor of the image that he feels his fans want him to be etc.
He is still capable of good music and I thought that Chill did have some surprisingly good stuff on it.
I thought the live Encores set an interesting live album.

My favorite (and feel his most whole) 80s album was the one after that - Floridays.

Floridays, Hot Water and Off To See The Lizard have some good songs on them, but I can't listen to them at all because of the synthesizers. If there was one thing I wish Buffett would do, it's re-record some of those 80s tunes with a more stripped down production.
On more listens to the new album, the more "meh" I am about it. The last few have run the gamut from stuff I really like, to mediocre tunes to a few I haven't been able to stand. This one I just find as completely mediocre. There isn't a single song I connect with.
