INTERVIEW: Ace Frehley
Published February 28, 2012
By Peter Hodgson

It’s the Les Paul that launched a million guitarists: the 1974 Cherry Sunburst three-pickup Gibson Les Paul used by Ace Frehley during KISS’s breakthrough era. The guitar, known as the Budokan Les Paul in honour of the historic Japanese venue where it was given one of its best-known public showings, left Ace’s stewardship a few years ago, and it was long since retired from the road. But now it’s back, in spirit at least, in the form of Gibson Custom’s new Ace Frehley “Budokan” Les Paul Custom. This limited edition instrument will be available in four versions: fifty signed guitars aged by Tom Murphy in the Gibson Custom Shop; one hundred aged (but not signed) pieces; a further 150 finished with Gibson’s VOS (Vintage Original Spec) process; and 1000 pieces of an Epiphone version which retains most of the design features of its Gibson big brother. Ace took some time to talk with I Heart Guitar about the new guitar, the 30+ year old classic it’s based on, and his future plans.

“It was my favourite guitar that I used pretty much exclusively through the 70s and 80s, I guess,” Frehley says of the original instrument. “I continued to use it even with Frehley’s Comet. I don’t even remember when I got it! It was some time around 1975, 76. I had three or four backups, but the particular one that they just released, which is called the Budokan guitar, it was always my favourite guitar, my number one. It just felt the best and played the best.”

So what exactly was so special about the guitar? How do you know when you’ve found ‘it’? “I forget who I was talking to, but I was talking to some other famous guitar player and he was telling me that every time he buys a new guitar it’s good for at least one new song,” Frehley says. “And I really understood what he was talking about. I like picking up guitars in pawn shops. And it’s not like it used to be, because pretty much pawn shops these days are aware of the vintage guitar market. But y’know, in the seventies I got a lot of great guitars from pawn shops, and every time I picked up a new guitar it would usually spark an idea for a new song.”

Eventually the Budokan Les Paul stopped being Ace’s favourite guitar, that title instead going to the Gibson AFS model released around the time of the KISS reunion tour in the late 90s.” In 2009 Ace gave the original Budokan guitar to KISS collector and superfan Matt Swanson. “I gave it to Matt and he’s loving it,” Frehley says.” But don’t worry: “I still have a wall of Les Pauls! But he wanted it really bad.”

Frehley is about to add yet more Les Pauls to his collection: “They’re shipping me a bunch of aged ones in the next couple of weeks, because that was part of the contract.” Ace laughs. “It’s pretty weird, Peter, because when I was at the Gibson Custom Shop and I signed 50 of them, they pretty much all felt the same! It was kinda scary how they did it! I was completely amazed when I played them and I couldn’t tell the difference between one from the other. And the quality control is amazing.” In fact, the new guitar was built according to ultra-precise laser scans of the original, to ensure that even the neck wear was replicated exactly. “Technology has affected every facet of every industry you can think of, from musical instruments to medicine, to you name it, and in most instances it’s for a positive reason,” Frehley says.

Ace has always been known for his three-pickup electronic outline. Ace himself actually carved out the hole for the middle pickup in the original Budokan guitar. It might surprise some fans to hear that on the Gibson versions of the Budokan guitar, the middle and neck pickups are actually not even connected – although the pickups remain connected in the Epiphone version. “To be totally honest with you, live I only use the treble pickup, the bridge pickup,” Frehley says. “And for simplicity I always disconnected my other pickups. Because if I ever tried to do the toggle switch effect, which I do from time to time, if the volume isn’t off on the other pickups, it will negate that effect. So I never switched to the other pickups live anyway. I would always disconnect my pickups to make life easier. And three pickups look great!” Those three pickups are a trio of DiMarzios, Frehley being one of their earliest big-name users. The Budokan guitar features a Super Distortion in the bridge position along with PAFs in the middle and neck. “One of my first shows with KISS, I remember meeting Larry DiMarzio. I’d given him a couple of pickups to rewind for me, and at that point in time Larry was rewinding them in his bedroom by hand! And I’ve been using his pickups on and off for years. Pretty much if you throw a DiMarzio Super Distortion into a Les Paul, plug it into a Marshall and turn it on ten, it’s a no-brainer!”

The toggle switch stutter effect achieved via the disconnected pickup is a classic rock sound, but Frehley was way ahead of the curve with his use of tapping on 1977′s “Shock Me,” a year before Eddie Van Halen popularised the effect on “Eruption.” A few other players had messed with the technique a little – Steve Hackett from Genesis, Harvey Mandel from Canned Heat, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Frank Zappa – but Ace was probably the most high-profile player to use the technique. So where did it come from? “I don’t know! I don’t remember! All I know is I picked it up. I know I got the toggle switch effect pretty much from Pete Townshend. I just took it a step further. But I don’t remember exactly where I got the tapping from.” So one of those things where you look down and realise you need that fret but you’re way over here and you need to figure out a way to get to it somehow? Ace laughs. “It was a long time ago, Peter!” I tell Ace about a Stevie Ray Vaughan interview where he joked about holding a fret down with a thumb tack so he could play a particularly out-of-reach chord. “I was just telling somebody that I guess you could say I’m the biggest innovator when it comes to special effects guitars – the smoking guitar, the light guitar, the rocket guitar, and more recently my pinwheel guitar effect. I’ve pretty much pushed the envelope on that.” Yet when it comes down to it Ace has achieved a lot with just his bare fingers on the guitar strings as well. “Yeah, well I still have some tricks up my sleeve that are yet to have been developed,” he laughs.

“I’ve started working on a new album, I’m writing a new book… there are a lot of good things on the horizon. At this point I think it’s just going to be an extension of No Regrets. There’s so much I left out because of the deadline, but after talking with so many different people I’ve got so many stories that have eluded me over the years. And there just wasn’t enough room to put them into No Regrets, and I was past the deadline as it was. But I think I’m going to come out with something in the effect of like a No Regrets II. But I also have the idea to put out a guitar book with all my guitar effects, tricks, recording techniques… I’ve learned a lot of tricks from working with a lot of great producers over the years, and I think I should write a book about it!”

Our time up, I selfishly conclude our interview by asking if there’s any chance of a return here to Australia any time soon. “Yeah! It’s something we’ve been talking about. There are some festivals I think I’m going to be doing this summer in Europe, so maybe we can work in Australia towards the end of this year or early next year. I don’t know particularly how it would work. We still haven’t been to Japan with this current line-up that I have now, so usually Japan and Australia go hand in hand.”

If the new one is as good as Anomaly, I am all for it. I still think Anomaly is great, straight ahead hard rock album. I listen to it regularly.

Ace Frehley Recording New Album With Help From Eddie Trunk

Radio and TV host Eddie Trunk has posted on his official Twitter account that he is currently helping original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley with his next album. Eddie was asked by a fan on Twitter if he thought that Ace Frehley would record another album?

Eddie's answer: "Yes, helping him with it now."

Eddie Trunk was vice president of Megaforce Records in the late 80's which had signed both Metallica and Anthrax. He earned executive producer credit on some works from the following bands: Anthrax, Raven, TT Quick, Manowar, Overkill, King's X, Prophet, Icon and Ace Frehley. Eddie Trunk was the main driving force behind reviving Ace Frehley's career, convincing Megaforce Records head Jon "Jonny Z" Zazula to sign Ace to a solo deal

Guitar legend Ace Frehley is in the studio working on a new album, the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Anomaly.

Ace is recording with members of his live band, drummer Matt Starr and bass player Chris Wyse. Starr posted a pic of himself and Ace in the studio on his blog with the caption: "Had a great week in the studio with Ace Frehley and Chris Wyse making some great new music Ace's new record. Stay tuned."

Wyse added "Had a blast these last few days playing with Ace Frehley and Matt Starr!!! Exciting new record coming from Ace!"

When pressed for further details on his official Facebook fan page, Starr said "No details yet. Just that we're working on it & it's gonna ROCK!"

Starr is a busy guy right now: in addition to stepping into the drummer spot in Ace's band last year when Scot Coogan departed to join Lita Ford, Starr plays with Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich's band Burning Rain and has toured the U.S. and U.K. with Love/Hate. As for Wyse, he's worked with Jerry Cantrell, The Cult, Ozzy Osbourne and Mick Jagger, and is vocalist and bassist of his own band, Owl. He was also one of the bassists who auditioned for Metallica in 2003.

I recorded one a few weeks back, but it hasn't been released yet. I got to suggest the topic and we had a discussion about KISS's long-form home videos. Hopefully it'll go live on iTunes in the near future.

Here's a link to the PodKISSt page and all the episodes available for download or to stream! It also has episodes of Ken's Cheap Trick podcast as well!

Oh cool--I enjoyed the show that, IIRC, discussed the bootleg videos, and I actually remember renting two or three of those early 90's (pre-makeup-reunion) VHS videos. Gene was actually kind of engaging to listen to before he adopted the capital-A "Asshole" (TM) persona on a full-time basis.

The boots 'cast was a lot of fun - I have several of the tapes that were discussed (although a couple made me go "I want that"). I couldn't recall for sure what my first Kiss boot was, but my bet would be on the Largo Dynasty show because that was the first tour I saw them on. Smiff and I talked about it a bit Tuesday, too - how downloading has changed the boot chase. Sometimes I miss the record fairs (and the occasional raids - at least two shows I was at were raided), but most of the time, not. I don't miss the guys showing you one tape, then handing you a different copy, or playing a sample audio tape then making a high-speed dub right in front of you. Mislabeled tapes, etc.

And Gene buying into his own hype has been a big turn-off in the Kiss world for me, especially the way he dismisses anyone who doesn't buy into his ideas completely.

That said...I'm looking forward to the new Ace album.

I actually bought the 5-disc KISS box for twenty bucks at Walmart not too long ago, and in listening to their 70's studio stuff, I'm reminded of how much my attitude towards them kind of soured after the 1996 reunion, not so much because of the idea behind the whole makeup/tour thing on and of itself, but in how it really marked a point after which Gene and Paul especially began to take themselves, and the band, much too seriously. For the most part, their music is fun--juvenile, but in a good way rather than a self-indulgent way. (I should mention that I've never taken as much time to listen their 80's material beyond the "Smashes, Thrashes & Hits" singles, although I've been curious about "Music From 'The Elder'" for years now.)

I guess what bothers me (besides Gene) is how cynical seems in the post-1996 context. I'm already bored by bandmates, estranged or otherwise, who compulsively snipe at and slam one another via the media, but the Gene/Paul vs. Ace/Peter thing is especially curious, because while Gene (especially) tends to sanctimoniously bash Ace and Peter for their drug and alcohol abuse, it's kind of difficult to overlook the fact that back in the 70's, KISS ostensibly glamourized drug and alcohol abuse in their music as much as any other band. Momentarily setting aside the dubious social value of a song such as "Cold Gin", for example--and I know that Ace Frehley wrote the song, not Gene and Paul--but in the context of nearly forty years of hindsight and band history, and given that the band has reportedly continued to play "Cold Gin" in Frehley's absence, it does infer that Gene and Paul are, at best, sending a mixed message, and at worst, cynically attempting to market their music to a particular audience member that they not-so-secretly scorn.

But maybe that's just me. KISS isn't the only band or artist that has had its music overshadowed by personalities and gossip. And frankly, Gene may well be smarter than the typical rock star--whatever else you might want to say about him, you shouldn't call him stupid. (A fair percentage of the complaints voiced about Gene are, frankly, anti-Semitic.) The bottom line is that when I went on a long car drive a few weeks back, I played their first five studio albums and was reminded of how well their music connected with me as a teenager, and that turned out to not be a bad thing at all. If Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter got more cynical as they aged, well, so did I.

BM (unfortunate initials) - "(Music From) The Elder" is well worth a listen, but don't expect an early Kiss album. There are definitely aspects of the album that are solidly in that area, but a good portion of the album isn't. It definitely has some cringe-worthy moments ("Mr. Blackwell"), but there are some really good tracks there, even some non-typical Kiss ones.

What has bugged me is that Gene and Paul have been clearly disingenuous about some of the alleged reasons they don't want to play with Ace and Peter. They claimed that Ace and Peter couldn't play some of the old songs, and that was why they had to keep playing the same old set list. But Ace is playing quite a few of the old Kiss tracks, including "Love Her All I Can", which Kiss added and quickly dropped. And I think there's more than a dollop of jealousy involved, too - it seems like it really eats at Gene and Paul that, despite all they do, Ace (especially) and Peter are extremely popular with the fans.

What I find ironic is that Gene is quick to bash Ace and/or Peter for their abuses and not showing up for a session, etc, but yet, in listening to an interview with Tom Harper (Paul's roadie in 1980), we find out the reason why Harper ended up being drafted to play bass on "Shandi" from Unmasked was because Gene called in sick that day.

So, it's bad if Ace missed a session because he was partying or whatever, but it's okay if Gene calls in sick because he spent the night doing Cher and/or Diana Ross?? Maybe Gene really was sick that day, but there are too many instances of Gene not playing the bass part in a song over the years and not seeming to care if someone else did it. I guess he figured he was part of the band and would get paid whether he played or not, so he focused on his many women and/or side projects.

Not only that, but he's quick to rip Ace or Peter for their on-stage mistakes despite the numerous examples of him forgetting lyrics. Which would be one thing if it was a deep track, but I've seen it on songs like 'Deuce' and 'God Of Thunder'.

ACE FREHLEY "Space Invader" - New Album Coming On June 24

Journalist Mitch Lafon just released this press release on facebook:

(New York, NY) - 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee ACE FREHLEY will release "Space Invader", his first new solo album in five years, via Entertainment One Music (eOne Music) on June 24th, 2014. The album will include at least nine brand new original songs as well as a cover of Steve Miller’s “The Joker.” This album is the first release under Frehley's new universal deal on eOne Music.

Frehley has released an official statement surrounding the exciting news:

“Life on Earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I’ve created over the years has withstood the test of time. Today I see no obstacles before me and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an Alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come!”

So, Gene and Paul have ripped Ace and his work ethic and diminished abilities as reasons why he was fired after the reunion, this will be his second solo album since he was replaced. As compared to how many Kiss albums in that time frame? Two.

Hmmmm...

Gene says Ace's output is a cross between Destroyer and Destroyer Resurrected.
