In 2012 Ian Anderson released Thick As A Brick 2, the follow-up to Jethro Tull's legendary concept album. The album was a critical and commercial success, charting around the world. In April he returns with Homo Erraticus, his new studio album. The original Thick As A Brick album, released in 1972, was based around the poem of disgraced child prodigy Gerald Bostock. For Homo Erraticus Anderson is reunited with Bostock, using lyrics written by Gerald based on an old historical manuscript. The manuscript examines key events from throughout British history before going on to offer a number of prophecies for the future.

Suitably dramatised and exaggerated by Bostock as metaphors for modern life, he presented Anderson with ideas for 14 songs, which have now been set to music. The result is Homo Erraticus. The album will be released on Anderson's own Calliandra Records label in conjunction with Kscope on April 14th.

Following the release of this "Jethro Tull album" in all but name, Ian and his band will be embarking on an extensive UK tour, where they will play the album in its entirety followed by a selection of Tull classics. These shows will be followed by further tours in Europe, America and more later in the year.

Ian Anderson will release a new album next year – but he’s not sure whether it will appear under the Jethro Tull name.

He describes the work as “more aggressive” than his last outing, Thick As A Brick 2, and says it’s likely to appear next spring.

He surprised fans by launching TAAB2 in his own name, even though the 1972 classic was billed as a Tull record, and last year reported he didn’t know whether the band entity had a future.

Now he says: “A new album is in the works for recording in December-January. The release of this concept album – no, I am not going to tell you the title – is scheduled for Easter 2014.

“Tours throughout 2014, beginning with the UK tour starting in late April, will feature this new material, together with a selection of the best of Jethro Tull.

“‘Is this to be an Ian Anderson album or a Jethro Tull album?’ I hear you ask. ‘Not sure, really,’ I reply, somewhat evasively…”

The demos were recorded in February, and he only needs to complete work on lyrics. “It’s set in a more aggressive style than TAAB2,” he reports. “Much less acoustic guitar, more flute and heavier guitar sounds. Folk-prog-metal, you might say if you were desperately searching for a descriptive term.

“There are lots of dynamics and varied tempos and keys throughout its 55 minutes. I knew exactly what I am doing – but then again, knowing me (as I am learning to do), I might just scrap it all and start afresh.”

Anderson brought his Thick As A Brick tour, featuring both the original album and its follow-up, to the Albert Hall last month.

Guess the big question if it ends up being a Tull album will be if Martin Barre is back in the picture...

Not if you know when you're demoing, recording, touring, etc.

Count me in for the box set. I'll have to preorder this from Burning Shed. Haven't ordered from them in a while, and I know JohnG waited quite a while for his Transatlantic set, but I'm willing to wait.

If it's not Tull (with Barre and Perry especially) I'm just not interested.

Were you not a fan of Thick As A Brick 2? I really liked it. It could've used a little more punch, which Barre would have added, but I really enjoyed the songs.

Looking more carefully at the versions available, I may skip the box and opt for the CD/DVD version. I'm not sure the bonus CD in the box set would be worth it, and I'm mostly interested in the 5.1 mix which both versions have.

The deluxe version (with shipping) is about $73 to the U.S. Very similar to the Steven Wilson "Raven" situation, where you have to get the multi-disc book/box to get the extra CDs, in this case described as "hotel demos." I'm going to hold off to see if any of these pop up on Amazon soon. I can live with the basic CD/DVD and wouldn't even mind a CD-only version. The Burning Sky price is OK, but then toss on another 6 or 7 bucks for shipping and it starts to get steep.

The 2-disc CD/DVD edition just went up at Amazon UK (see details in the first post). No other editions are listed yet.

I put my pre-order in. I bought TAAB II used and like it much more than I thought I would. Actually I am in the hunt for the Steve Wilson mix .

Exclusive in the US to Amazon, $59.81 and free shipping because it's over $35 (if you don't already have Amazon Prime). Yes, there might be sales tax, but still cheaper and quicker than ordering the UK edition, and easier to return if there's any damage in transit etc..

alas, ian anderson/jethro tull are one of those entities that i have, for some reason or another, completely lost interest in.

lumped in there with van morrison, for sure, and probably yes and john hiatt and mary chapin carpenter. an eclectic array i know, but all the same for me nonetheless in that i keep waiting for the next 'aqualung" or "moondance" or "bring the family" or "fragile" and all i get are basically formulaic forgetful songs with no lasting effect whatsoever.

tull/anderson and morrison are the worst though. i kept on buying and buying and liking less and less.

i have gotten rid of most my tull CD's and only keep my morrison's because they are OOP. but i can't tell you the last time i really liked an album by either one of them. morrison is probably 'hymns to the silence' (even though there is a prevailing guitar riff throughout the entire thing) and for tull, it just might be "aqualung"

Renny, if it's been 40+ years since the last Tull/Anderson album you've enjoyed, then I wouldn't try to convince you otherwise, but Thick As A Brick 2 is excellent. It's lacking some bite that Martin Barre probably would have brought to the material, but it's a very worthy follow-up to the original as long as you have reasonable expectations. For most artists who have been around since the '60s or '70s, I know I can't expect them to release anything that will rival their prime years. I'm just happy that they're still around making music. Marshall Crenshaw is one of my all-time favorites but it's been over 20 years since he released something that I absolutely loved (Life's Too Short). I still enjoy hearing anything he releases, though, since I love hearing his voice. Considering how many of my favorites are either dead or are shells of what they once were, I try not to take the ones who are still pretty good for granted.

I have yet to pick up TAAB2, but I plan to get it one of these days.
I'm interested in Homo Erraticus, too, but really only want the CD(s).
If a CD-only version comes available on Amazon, I'll pick up both of
these albums this year.

Renny, were getting up there brother (and even more so are our hero's), be happy FOR ANYTHING and just enjoy. Rich is so right and I know you agree, so just keep rock'in as you always have been.

Don't mean to be preachy but I have known you (on the board) for about, what 20 freak'in years? Just wear that smile like we all do when our "friends" can offer anything (and not that they need too for they provided so very much already).
