Description
Legendary rocker, Marshall Crenshaw, releases his first new CD in more than six years, “#392: The EP Collection.”

The album compiles all of the original songs and cover versions from the six 10” EPs Crenshaw released over the last three years, with some of the songs featuring new mixes. There are also two previously unreleased “bonus” tracks, a live cover of the Everly Brothers’ “Many With Money” recorded with the Bottle Rockets and a demo of the Crenshaw chestnut, “Front Page News” along with special liner notes penned by Crenshaw for the release.

“I've been making records for most of my adult life,” says Crenshaw, “at this point in time I think that I've mostly gotten the hang of it, and I still love doing it.”

“I’ve always put a great deal of care into the albums I’ve made,” Crenshaw says, and this is evidenced by the depth of his original songs contained here as well as the covers ranging from the Carpenters and James McMurtry to the The Move and The Easybeats.

Over the course of a career that’s spanned three decades, 13 albums and hundreds of songs, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of melody, craftsmanship and passion, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base.

His debut album, Marshall Crenshaw, was acclaimed as a pop masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a first-rate songwriter, singer and guitarist. The record spawned the Top 40 single “Someday Someway,” which rockabilly singer Robert Gordon covered and scored a hit with a year earlier. Other Crenshaw classics include “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time,” “Whenever You’re On My Mind,” “There She Goes Again” and “Cynical Girl.” The great songs continued with the Life’s Too Short album on MCA (“Fantastic Planet of Love”), three albums for Razor & Tie and the 2009 release Jaggedland (“Someone Told Me,” “Passing Through,” “Never Coming Down”).

Marshall Crenshaw is releasing a series of three 10" EPs on his website, each one containing one new song, one reworking of one of his original songs, and one cover. You get digital downloads (mp3) with the 10" 45 rpm discs. Two are already released and available now, and the third one is expected in the fall. All three are $30; they're $12 each. I have the first two, and they're excellent, highly recommended, especially for Crenshaw fans. Don't be scared off by the Carpenters cover (Close To You) -- it's great.

Bump: As Marshall promised, the vinyl EPs have now been compiled into a general release CD to serve as his new album. Some of the tracks have been remixed, and a couple of new bonuses have been thrown it. See the first post for full details.

There are 18 tracks on the original EPs. There are 12 tracks reissued on the CD plus 2 new tracks. The completist must buy all of them to get the goods. The EPs are available digitally from Amazon. Yes, I'll buy the CD to complete the set.
