Mayer Hawthorne announces new album, Where Does This Door Go
BY CHRIS COPLAN ON APRIL 29TH, 2013 IN NEWS, TOUR DATES

Neo-soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne will release his third full-length album, Where Does This Door Go, on July 16th via Republic Records. Featuring production from Pharrell Williams, Jack Splash, and Oak (of Oak & Pop), Hawthorne describes the material as “Steely Dan meets the Beastie Boys”, adding, “The only rule I had when I went in to make this album was that it had to be fun.”

Moving away from the break-up-centric tunes of 2011′s How Do You Do, the record is further described as coming-of-age tale, “a journey into the unknown. As a musician, you’re only as good as your next record, and you never know what’s through that next door.”

While a tracklist has yet to be confirmed, the electro-funk ballad “Designer Drug” was unveiled earlier this month, and a lead single entitled “Her Favorite Song” will be released sometime in May. Below, watch the album’s announcement trailer, which pairs a sweeping orchestral number with door-opening footage from classics like The Matrix, Alice In Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and more.

In support of the record, Hawthorne will be on tour throughout the summer, supporting the slightly-less-soulful OneRepublic.

You can hear the first single, "Her Favorite Song", with Jessie Ware on SoundCloud:

For some reason, this reminds me of something from Style Council.

Based on all the pre-release info, I was under the impression this was going to be a hip-hop inflected album & far removed from his previous release, so I held off until finally listening to some clips. After giving the deluxe edition a few listens I have to say that it's really good. If you're a fan of recent Steely Dan releases (which I am), there's a lot to like here. There is one song with a guest rapper...definitely not my thing...but it's not terrible and only lasts about 4 minutes. If you've been on the fence about it and these comments mean anything to you, I can heartily recommend it. Not a classic, but a VERY GOOD record.

This is an example of someone I'm ok with buying downloads. I got one song (retro 60s pop soul sounding) from an album of his a year or so ago that I had heard on XM and really liked, but the rest of the sample didn't do much for me.
I heard a very Steely Dan like new one on XM and listened to the new samples... a few I liked, but purchased the entire album MP3 because it was like $6.
