Found in a New York Post article (so it must be true)......

The fabric four
Beatles clothing line to bow in new mdse. deal

(partial article)
The new apparel line would coincide with The Beatles’ BBC recordings, which are being re-packaged for release in September.

I'm guessing like the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, it's just going to be the same album with no new tracks....and updated mastering.

Added by Linda -- this will be coming out on November 11th:

Didn't know this had even gone out of print again. I know it was briefly deleted a few years ago, but it was almost immediately re-released in as far as i could tell identical form to the original.

Yes, all they're reporting is that the album is being "re-packaged"...not re-mastered, not-remixed, and not re-released. I'm guessing that it's merely going to be sold as a tie-in with some crap piece of clothing in a fancy new "package".

It's nice to see that Apple's really working hard on the important stuff.

If they come out with a version of Lennon's Abbey Road suit, I'm in.

Probably the new typical cheap cardboard packaging.

The sound quality would have to be improved significantly for me to get this again.

Doubt if that's possible, due to the BBC's apparently pretty low fi recording methods back in the day. Lots of the BBC archive stuff is cool beyond belief, but little of the real older stuff is high audio quality.

This thread ought to be re-titled "The Beatles "Live at the BBC" (Apple/EMI) - repackaging", since - as Geff observed - it's in print today and thus can't be reissued..

On that note (and perhaps this should be a new thread entirely) how many of us have re-purchased a CD (or a vinyl album for that matter) which was identical in every way - save the packaging - from one we already owned? I can recall one or two LPs that I bought for an alternate sleeve, and I have a version of the Sgt. Pepper CD in a "deluxe package", but not too much else.

And I surely won't be buying another copy of BBC no matter what it's enclosed in!

IIRC, the original 1994 "BBC" package contained a typo somewhere in the back cover tracklisting. Also--again, if I remember correctly, and Geff alluded to this, the album was originally supposed to be one of those "limited edition" releases, and actually did go OOP after two or three years.

I think it's a great title, but ultimately a no-win situation for the Beatles--bootleggers put out a couple of massive CD boxed sets collecting hours of this BBC that were selling for huge amounts of money--$250-300 in 1994 dollars.

It is frustrating.

The Kinks showed how to do a BBC package correctly.....you would think The Beatles would want to do something similar.

It's one of the frustrating things about being a Beatles fan. They still sell in such massive numbers that they don't need to worry about appeasing their hard-core fans (like myself), who just want as much previously unreleased stuff as we can get, presented as close to the original sound as possible - no editing, remixing, or otherwise "futzing around with" - in the best sound possible (even if the "best" doesn't sound all that great). But as long as they're marketing towards the casual fans, we will never get that.

It's sad that the bootleggers are better caretakers of The Beatles' musical legacy than The Beatles themselves are.

That's been one benefit of the internet: very few bootleggers are making money anymore, as it's all out there for free.

Maybe Apple/EMI can finally afford a proofreader.

Of course there is a grey market alternative - the 9 volume complete BBC recordings...mostly Russian Federation stuff, but comes in many flavors, single mini-LP CD versions, or compete sets....a little investigative activity should be able to turn some up.... I picked these up many years ago prior to the EMI collection....

Are the performances worth collecting? I think I mentioned above, I owned the EMI set until recently & finally came to the conclusion that I greatly prefer the official releases. The Beatles while phenomenal didn't tend to be particularly creative live.

If I remember correctly, the 9-disc set contained all of the BBC radio shows as originally broadcast, but that at least some of the individual tracks appeared multiple times--the Beatles would go in and record fresh interstitial comments with whatshisname, the BBC host, but that the same song recording--albeit an alternate recording to the released version--was often used more than once.

That was done a couple of times, but the Great Dane box didn't include any of the repeated performances, only the original BBC performances were used. Your better bet is to ahold of the 10-disc Purple Chick set, which includes upgrades of the performances in the Great Dane box, but also includes the stuff that surfaced after it came out. That's about as complete a set of Beeb performances as we're ever gonna get.

To repeat my question: Are any of the performances musically an upgrade from the studio albums?
