A movie director who's not an auterist's darling (or anybody's darling--apparently,he was a first class bastard) but who managed to direct a lot of fine films in a career that lasted from the silent era to the era of Elvis.

For sheer cultural impact, it's hard to top Casablanca, but my fave is The Adventures Of Robin Hood.
