Harrison Ford. First name that popped into my head when I read the question, even before I saw the poll.

I went with Clint Eastwood.

I think he's got a legitimate claim, but he's also my personal favorite. Harrison Ford and Steve McQueen also in the mix.

The first name to flash in my head was Stallone, after that Eastwood, Lee, Willis & Ahnold get in the mix.

Clint Eastwood displayed mastery, dominance even, over the most different flavors of iconic action hero.

Western? Check. All time great.
Cop? Check. The broke the mold after Dirty Harry. And The Gauntlet.
Heist movie? See Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, one of his best films.
Army, war stuff? Check. Heartbreak Ridge, Kelly's Heroes
Fighter pilot type deal -- Firefox.
Fruity circus Burt Reynolds type stuff, with bar room brawls -- the Every Which Way But Loose movies.
Prison -- Escape from Alcatraz is one of my favorites.
Murderey stuff -- movies like Play Misty for Me and Tightrope.
And other general action things like In the Line of Fire.

Not all of the above are classics, but he truly fired on all cylinders in more types of action movies than any other man. Arnold and Stallone never did a western. And so on.

Arnold did The Villain with Ann Margret and Kirk Douglas, which was a western crossed with a Looney Tunes episode. Truly bizarre movie.

Being an 80s kid, I grew up with Arnold as the top dog and it felt wrong to vote for anyone else.

Jackie Chan did his own stunts.
Case closed.

I voted for John Wayne, was one the greatest stars of all time. Clint Eastwood and Arnold Shwarzanegger had stinkers that even their fans stayed away from. None of Wayne's worst movies ever lost money simply because he was in them.

Before anyone hyperventilates at my first sentence, "movie star" is not the necessarily the same as "great actor" (although I believe Wayne is underrated as an actor). "Star" is the ability to get butts in movie theatre seats, and Wayne had a stronger and longer appeal than any other action star and his drawing power lasted longer into his twilight years. Clint Eastwood's post-Unforgiven appeal has been as a director and not as an action star.

Incidentally, I almost wrote that Wayne was the biggest star of all time except I forgot the obvious. I don't think that even Wayne could get his fans to see him in not one but two silent movies after the sound era began, so Charlie Chaplin trumps Wayne. But Chaplin's appeal is as a loveable underdog, not as an action hero.

It's because despite wanting to vote for Jennifer Garner, you knew in your heart it was wrong.

If you're talking the modern era of filmmaking, I'd have to give the nod to Arnold Schwarzanegger with a narrow lead over Sylvester Stallone.

You know, I didn't think about it, but if you look at it on a world wide basis, Jackie Chan is a bigger world-wide star than Schwarzanegger or Stallone.
The Chan movies most Americans saw were lame buddy films with Chris Tucker. Most of his best work was only available on DVD simply because
it wasn't in English. Also, as much as John Wayne is revered by a large section of Americans, I don't know how big his global appeal was outside of
this country.

I went with Chan, but truth be told I really don't care.
