With the news that Quicksilver will appear (in some form) in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers 2, I'm curious which you feel better fits the characters. Do you think of them first as mutants or Avengers?

For me, they're Avengers first and foremost. I first encountered them in the Avengers book, and as I read more the Kooky Quartet run became one of my favorite Avengers teams. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as mutants is in the same category as Kingpin as a Spider-Man villain or Sandman and Medusa as FF villains - I know it happened, but I don't ever really think about it.

Avengers. I can't recall either of them ever being X-Men.

They are Avengers.

Well, aside from the Brotherhood stuff in the 60s, Quicksilver was a member of X-Factor in the 90s (the Peter David run). I think he's also been a member of PADs recent X-Factor run, too.

It does seem a bit odd that not only are Hawkeye and Black Widow Avengers in the movies before Wasp and Ant/Giant-Man, but it looks like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will beat them, too.

They're the children of Magneto. You can't get any more X-Men universe than that.

Plus, I hated that the Avengers quickly fell into becoming a halfway house for every "criminal of circumstance" out there.

Quicksilver is an X-Men character to me, Scarlet Witch is an Avenger character. When I think of them together, Avengers all the way.

Avengers

I always thought of them as Avengers. I think there's somewhat of a clean "break" in the X-Men, because they were introduced way back in the early days, then thereafter were in Avengers books. Unlike any other book, X-Men has this "dead zone" where it was reprints and practically cancelled, and then comes back as the New X-Men. And when it comes back as New X-Men, Wanda and Pietro weren't introduced at all -- not that I can remember, not anytime soon.

So the Avengers history dominates in my mind, compounded by the way Wanda married the Vision.

FF?

Yeah, Scarlet Witch in particular is central to so many important Avengers stories that it seems odd to separate her out from that. Quicksilver is a bit more fluid (no pun intended), having ties to the X-books, the Avengers, and the FF (through the Inhumans). Even the Vision/Scarlet Witch story has more of a connection to Simon Williams (as Vision's "brother") than to Pietro.

Speaking of Quicksilver's ties to the Inhumans, it's always sad to see someone as talented and intelligent as Crystal married to a total jerk like Pietro.

Peter David wrote a pretty cool explanation for Quicksilver's personality.

Which didn't work out. So they quickly put the call out for lower tier villains.

The stories from issues 19-50 are my favorite era of Avengers.

Thomas' run is great, and gets even better when Buscema starts drawing. It's the definitive Avengers run, in my mind.

They were never X-men but ran with the Brotherhood for about 4 seconds back in the early '60's. They joined the Avengers way back in issue 16 (?) and have been Avengers ever since, almost 50 years.

Yeah, they were in the Brotherhood from issues 4-11, resenting it and loathing their team-mates the whole time.

I've always thought of both as Avenger's commodities.
