Should Marvel Make a ‘Luke Cage’ Movie Starring The Rock?

Marvel has expressed interest in working with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The Rock has expressed interest in playing Luke Cage for Marvel. Seemingly, there’s nothing preventing this match made in superhero heaven from happening…except perhaps the fans. Would you want to see The Rock tackle Luke Cage?

A few days ago, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige put it out there that Marvel is intrigued by the prospect of crafting a superhero film around The Rock. While Feige did not state plainly which character he’d want The Rock to inhabit, The Rock himself has made it clear that he’s got eyes on Luke Cage, saying a year ago: “I would love to play Luke Cage. Love that superhero. I’d crush it.”

Then came this on Friday: via his Twitter account, The Rock made his boldest bid for the job yet, launching a “viral campaign”:

Only if he wears Luke's classic headband and yellow disco shirt.

I think the chances of that are slim.

I don't have strong feelings either but I'd vote no. He doesn't look black to me, even though he's part black.

His dad would've been perfect if he were younger.

The him not looking black enough thing occurred to me as well. It seems odd to cast one of the few black super heroes with one of the most racially ambiguous actors out there. I do agree that his dad would have been perfect at least appearance wise 30, 40 years ago. Which would have been the perfect time to make the movie. Kung fu movies were in, black exploitation movies were in. It could have really grabbed hold in that time if done well.

The Rock is "black enough" but I would have liked a more classic appearance like his dad.

I didn't even know until fairly recently that Johnson was of mixed heritage. I thought he was purely of Polynesian descent; those are the features that to dominate, to my eye.

Get an unknown. Guy needs to be ripped and swole, plus I think it works better if his skin is really dark. I used to think of his skin as being almost like steel, and the whole look just kind of goes together.

I hope they give him a small fro, just like 3/4". To give it an almost timeless retro look from the early 70's. And I'm not sure the Rock can grow it right. I think his hair is straight.

Luke Cage, as much of a cliche' as it may seem now, was hard-core, street-level, inner-city, criminal, gangster ghetto.

I'm not sure Dwayne, as charismatic as he is, can convey any of that. Maybe he can.

Or maybe it's not important anymore that Cage have that background. I think it is; how many heroes have come out with that background? Don't "urban youth" deserve their own hero? From Harlem, no less?

But, what do I know.

And Terry Crews would be perfect. He's got a solid background in film and TV, he's not an unknown, he looks the part and he could draw any demo you might want to have.

Terry Crews is an actor I could get almost excited about in the role. About as excited as I could get about a movie based on a character I am only barely aware of and have very little interest in.

The Rock wouldn't be my first choice, but I could see it working well with the right director.

My hope is that they would do a period piece with one of these characters from the blacksploitation era. Luke Cage, Black Lightning... But I'm guessing that they'll all be updated.

That Spectre animated short set in the 70's was perfect.

They should capture the feel of that with an unspecified period, sort of like Xmen First Class.

I agree that Luke Cage is one of those characters best suited to a period piece, but I am not holding my breath it will happen.

I think making this movie a blacksploitation piece would be a big mistake. If you do that, you make it more about the genre instead of the character. I know that's how he started but that's not who he is now and it's not essential to make him a super-powered Shaft.
