The tangled history of "Imaginos", BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's last album for Columbia, has passed into legend for BÖC fans. The name and concept comes from late-'60s sci-fi/fantasy writings by band manager/producer Sandy Pearlman that inspired the original band name; they then became the basis for a planned trilogy of solo albums by BÖC drummer/songwriter Albert Bouchard, who had been working on the material since the early '70s with Pearlman. After Bouchard was fired from the band in 1981, he recorded a 90-minute album with such sidemen as Aldo Nova and THE DOORS' Robbie Krieger, but this version of the album was rejected by Columbia execs in 1984. After the release and commercial disappointment of BÖC's "Club Ninja", Pearlman then resurrected the idea and began production in 1986, adding vocals by BÖC's Buck Dharma and Eric Bloom and guitar parts by Joe Satriani, among many others. The result was — no surprise — BÖC's most controversial album (and ironically, the first in years to feature the original lineup), probably their heaviest and most proggy outing, and an appropriately complex swan song for a complex band. The Real Gone reissue features a new 2012 remix and new notes by BÖC expert Scott Schinder, along with the original album and inner sleeve art.

The 2012 remix of "Imaginos" is due out in April via Real Gone Music/Razor & Tie.

Have to admit I'm not real keen on having this record remixed. The sound was huge, fat and bloated but I thought it fit the material perfectly. Nonetheless, I'll probably check it out as Imaginos is one of my favorite BOC albums.

P.S. So if it's remixed in 2012, and the remix is released in 2013, does that make it a 2012 remix or a 2013 remix? :-o

I'm definitely in for this! And as for alternate versions, you can also add in the recent remaster from the Complete box set.

Here's a link to the order sheet from Real Gone Music:

This album will be next in the BOC thread. No way I'd get it as I already had the American Beat CD and sold it for $80 and now have Imaginos with the box set. Also, I think it stinks! Of course, it was recorded over so many years with so many people calling it BOC is a bit of a stretch.

A new remix would do nothing for me-adding the remaining material maybe, but not a remix when it was just remastered months ago.

Hmmmm. I used to like this album in a sort of tongue in cheek kind of way, but I'm not sure if it will have aged well for me. I never knew the full story behind it...I just knew it was way better than Club Ninja but not nearly as good as their early seventies stuff (I'm one of those fans who thinks their first three albums are their best).

Interesting. Whether or not I get this will depend on what they mean by "remix."

Isn't this the same version as included in the recent box set?

Nope-a different mix and mastering. Not sure why, but here it is.

Hmmm. Thanks.

Now, a dilemma.

I got this yesterday, and I'm pretty certain this is not a remix but the same remaster from last year's box set. Both the remaster and this Real Gone edition have the same exact times on the tracks, and each disc's total time is 55:24. And from what I've compared, they do not sound different from each other.

Even the Real Gone edition has the white border around the edge of the front and back cover, and the title on the disc is the same font as the box set edition. I wouldn't be surprised if Real Gone actually scanned the artwork from the box set edition.

What you do get with the Real Gone are liner notes by Scott Schinder.

Well, that makes things easier. Thanks for the info!

FWIW, the Real Gone product description in the Amazon listing includes this phrase:
Quote:
Our Real Gone reissue features a new 2012 remaster and new notes by BOC expert Scott Schinder, along with the original album and inner sleeve art.

That seems quite a step back from previous remix claims. Does it at least come in a jewel case?
