Looking to break out of the commercial funk that had plagued the band since their brilliant debut, The Tubes looked to wunderkind producer and band friend Todd Rundgren, to oversee their next record. The Tubes managed to reinvent themselves (yet again), creating an album every bit as sophisticated and irreverent as their past releases, but with a new level of musicality and accessibility. But was it enough? The band devised a concept album based upon the theme, with tongue firmly in cheek, that television wasn't making any of its devotees any smarter as they experienced the programming they were being bombarded with in the late seventies.

The album features the Tubes classics, Prime Time, TV is King and Love's A Mystery (I Don't Understand). This expanded edition of the album includes all new mastering by Vic Anesini and a new essay with fresh interviews with the current and past band members by Ralph Chapman. The release is expanded with four unreleased tracks, chosen by the band's Fee Waybill, excerpted from their final A&M album submission. That unreleased album has come to be known alternately as either the "Black Album" or "Suffer For Sound".

I didn't see this on here when I searched, but here it is. If it was already posted, I apologize!

It's a shame there's never been an official release of Suffer For Sound. The boots sound like they're from a cassette tape. I would buy it if it ever came out. I will probably buy this, though I already have RC & it's one of my least favorite Tubes albums. I still need to pick up the expanded Inside Outside before it goes oop & sells for a fortune.

Also, speaking of the Tubes, will Michael Cotton's DVD documentary EVER come out??

Being the guy who wrote the liner notes for this, I think you'll be pretty pleased with this release. It started out as one of my least favorite Tubes records, and through the process, it has become my favorite. And yes, I suspect Outside Inside won't be around forever.

Thanks for caring about The Tubes, one of my all time favorites, & a group I feel has been horribly under appreciated & misunderstood. Their satire seems to go over many people's heads.

I'm still hoping to see Out Of Control from Heavenly Bodies on cd someday (HINT!).

I hope Iconoclassic releases more Tubes albums.

They were the first act I ever saw in concert in '75, an experience I'll never forget.

Someone there must be a fan and we reap the benefits. :)

My first Tubes show was 1976 (Now Tour). AMAZING show; along with Sarah McLachlan's Solace Tour & Billy Joel's Turnstiles tour it's in my top 3 concerts ever.

Also had an interesting experience meeting the band at a press conference; I was a college dj & Re Styles was flirting like crazy with my dj friend (2 of us met them at their press conference); though she stood us up for a promised interview the next day.

I finally found a used copy of the American Beat reissue for a reasonable price. Now I'll have to buy this title again. Not that I mind...much...

Well, this one's my favorite Tubes album, but that's partly the Todd connection. Saw them in NY Central Park touring for this album (my only visit to NYC, in summer 1980); it was a free concert as I recall, and Todd came out for an encore of all Who songs.

If anyone cares, this is a respectable (for 44/16 cd) DR 11.

It feels so strange to hear the Suffer For Sound tracks in decent quality!
